Title: Tasteful upgrades to RD with powerdynamo?
Post by: Striker1423 on October 31, 2019, 08:49:01 AM
So, I did the powerdynamo install and aside from a few things I need to check before I put it to bed completely, I was wondering what you guys like to upgrade on the bike while your at it?

I was thinking of a new enclosed LED headlight and possibly a phone mount/charger.

But what really intrigues me is the idea of adding a digital speedometer and tach. My stock ones work but bounce all over the place so its impossible to tell how fast either is actually going. Anyone successfully do this with the 73-75 rd250/350?

I actually removed the led lights on mine and went back to a halogen headlight bulb and 1157 tail lights since it's producing more than enough power for them now. The led tail light bulbs were horrible and I just don't like them anyway. I only have led in the blinkers because they're tiny aft market ones..

Frank, well you know I put those LED's in the bike mainly because of trying to get as much energy for the stock type ignition at the time of the tune for Dave T when he owned it.
Yes, the PD/vape doesn't use battery voltage for the ignition power anymore due to 2 separate magneto systems.
I still will have some use for them if you will sell them to me for other jobs that would need them.
Let me know.

I see Koso makes a small square speedo/tach etc LCD.
https://kosonorthamerica.com/product/xr-01-speedometer/

If I could mount that in the middle of the handlebars that just might be the ticket. I noticed my stock speedo is about 3 to 4 mph slower than actual speed at 55. So I wondered why at cruise most people were passing me  lol.

I might hit forgo the tach and use my phone if I can mount it sideways in the center. GPS and speedometer in one as Gopgle maps shows speed too.

Ground effects. Definitely tasteful.  :haw:

I had my gauges rebuilt by a guy in England. Updated the brushes and dampening fluid too. Also remade the faces with all the correct colors. They work really smoothly now.. but it cost about $500 to get done.

I'm pretty sure I still have them Chuck, I'll gladly mail them to you if you can use them. No cost to you of course 😁

I love using Google maps on a bike.  It's almost like cheating when the twisties come.

Surprised no one has said handling and brake upgrade mods? That's where I like to start.

The Scitsu tachometers are awesome. Battery powered and very easy to set up. I had one on my last build and it was smooth and good looking. You can get whatever RPM you want on the dial and they have different models depending on how if your ignition fires (stock or lost spark etc.)

Yea the suspension seems fine stock. I'm sure there's way more that can be done but this is my second bike and its 4 years newer than my first bike (71 Kawi G3SS). :)

My favorite non electrical upgrades, in no particular order:
12 to 13 mm master cylinder
Braided one piece brake hose
520 chain and alloy rear sprocket
Lighter battery
Moderate rearsets
YZ125 reed valves
Dale A carb mods, with Y-boot and large single filter
