Title: RD350B Kickstarter Slipping
Post by: Viking on November 24, 2019, 03:29:31 PM
Does anyone know the typical reason why the kickstarter may be slipping?  Does the ratchet gear or the wave washer just get worn?  I did notice that the plate washer at the end of the shaft was missing - does that put pressure on the mechanism which holds the ratchet gear up against the starter gear?

Did you recently rebuild it?  Or was it working and then now does not?

I just rebuilt the top end so it has a bit more compression and replaced the clutch.

Drain the oil and pull the clutch side cover.

Put the kicker back on and gently push it thru with the plugs out and you should be able to see what's going on.

Almost positive that plate washer is just a shim for the kickstarter.

When I pulled my cover I saw that the spring had come out of position on the case.

Hmm. I've taken my clutch cover many times and have never had the kickstart spring come out. Did this issue occur before you replaced the clutch pads and plate?

If you had the clutch apart,
I'm putting my bet on you didn't clock the pressure plate!
Pull off the cover AGAIN...then pull off the pressure plate and see if its not clocked with the timing mark on the inner hub.
Its a 3 right and 3 wrong as you put it on and the clutch is not even engaged.
You will find the clutch is not working too.
Go find the other post of the 6 and 7 plate discussion and you will see a late pressure plate picture that has the slash timing marks on it, there is 3 on it. Line up any one of those to the inner hub mark.
You stated you have a 75 B model that has a 7 plate clutch and is the clockable clutch.

I replaced the small engagement gear, the wave washer and added the final washer or shim and it works!

Now the left side won't fire with the new top end. I'm getting spark and the plug is wet.  Both lights on the Newtronic are pulsing...?

have you checked for spark with the plug out of the motor? if you have it there, theny ou probably just fouled it with assembly oil in the cyl/crankcase

Yeah, points cover was on. I checked the plug with it out and even replaced it.  I'll fiddle with it this weekend and see what I come up with.
