Title: 1973 RD250
Post by: Gene Ungar on December 10, 2019, 01:21:52 PM
In my area

https://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/d/houston-1973-yamaha-rd250/7032642057.html

Looks more like a rolling basket case than a complete motorcycle.  It's hard to believe that it "ran about a year ago, and there weren't any issues with it then".  But it does look like a frame with motor and title plus some spares.

What's it really worth?  The last RD250 basket I bought cost me $400.  It was more complete but had fewer spares.

I'm interested, but don't want to insult the seller unnecessarily.

id think its in the 6-800 range if it actually ran a year ago. 1500 is just wishful thinking.  :twocents:

Well, it is Houston. Haha
I am from Austin. And, I watch Texas like a hawk (mostly).
A titled RD in Texas is usually around $800-1000. I have not seen any RD stuff for sale for a while.
At least they spit shined it a little.
Plus, I would probably have a 350 top on it about a hour after I would get it home. And, be giving a test run an hour later. But, I am silly.
I would say go check it out!
I would, but I am in the middle of putting mine back together.

I'm going to let it marinate until after the holidays.  Then a visit and a frank chat might pay dividends.

I was also thinking of a 350 top end. I have another 250 basket that I am finishing up this winter.  That means that I will have space in my shop.
Title: 1973 RD250 is Now Mine

Well, it's mine now.  We ended up agreeing on $950.  Clean title and lots of extra parts.  At first I was feeling like I had (yet again) paid too much, but as I got deeper into the pile I think that it was a fair price.  The PO's buddy was building a café racer from an RD250, so all the spare parts from that build went into the pile.  I got two exhaust systems in great shape.  Mufflers are in good shape with good chrome.  I even got one pair of headpipes with good chrome - all the others I've seen have lost chrome and rusted.

So I took the second best exhaust and put it on my RD250 runner.  Those pipes were then mounted on the café racer that is in process.

I'm saving the best set to go on my restoration of this RD250.  It may get the RD350 front end that was included in the sale, but that's TBD.

It's good to have another project in the que.  In order: 1973 RD250 café project, 1983 XS650 Special II that just needs a front cam chain guide (cosmetics are complete), 1976 Kawasaki triple 500 (KH500) that needs a complete rebuild, then this RD250 that will be restored.

I have enough to keep me busy for a while. ;D
