Dumb question but I have to ask anyway. What do you folks use to cut the reed stuffers off the RZ/Banshee intake manifolds, razor knife or dremel? I got careless on the first one I tried and cut straight through the rectangular sealing lip. :bang:
I know I have to be more careful but maybe someone has a hack to make it easier.
Mike D
i use an exacto. however, the upp ones dont have the stuffer. :twocents:
Hi Mark
I assume patience is the key here. Do you just cut them flush or taper them to the inlet?
BTW how well do the UPP manifolds fit?
Mike D
the upps bolt right on. you need a gasket between them and the cage though.
on the banshee style, i usually cut, them smooth with a sanding drum on a dremel.
1 more question
I already have the Banshee cross over tube so will it fit the UPP manifolds?
Mike D
yup
cool thanks
I just cut them off with a utility knife leaving a sliver stick up and then hold it up to a belt sander and sand it smooth or.............I take some sticky back sand paper (120 grit) and stick it to something flat like a table top or even a countertop and then slide the intake back and forth on the sand paper until it's smooth. And as mark says, use a gasket between the manifold and reed block as well.
Wouldn't that sand the sealing lip off also?
Mike D
That's why you use a gasket.
That's good news, looks like I can salvage the one I cut into the sealing lip. Do you go down to the metal or just until the rubber is smooth and flat?
Mike D
I take them right down to the metal.
thanks for the info Jspooner
Here's a picture of one of mine from my TZ motor.
thanks, much clearer now
This thread makes me a bit curious. The "stuffers" were used to improve flow somewhat. And using RZ manifolds is mainly because of the balance tube fittings, right?
Why not use something like this instead? https://www.economycycle.com/shop/yamaha-rd250350400r5ds6ds7-parts/manifold-kit-with-cross-over/
Any experience with those, especially with regards to ethanol blended gas?
I do, however, believe the RZ style rubber bung connection for the balance tube is a better design than a molded in stub, with regards to potential leaks.
I don't know why the OP was cutting them of but I cut them off because I use VForce reeds and they have their own stuffers.
Exactly. And if he's using stock reed cages, there is no benefit in removing the ears (stuffers). Without them there is a huge step change in area from the small reeds to the gaping hole in the reed cage. Airflow doesn't like that sort of change in area.
I did it in my ignorance, I was trying to help the mid range stumble on my RD400 and read that a cross over pipe would help so I bought a set of RZ manifolds to modify. If this is the wrong direction what are other members using to mount their cross overs or boost bottles?
