Title: Triple Tree Bearing Races...
Post by: AAAltered on March 19, 2020, 11:16:09 AM
I pulled off my triple today for its move to my new frame.

I was surprised to find rollers in there - top and bottom.  Frankly I didn't put them there - 202Wagon must have when he rebuilt this bike for me after Sandy.

Now i have questions:
- can I safely get these races out, then into my new frame, or will they get destroyed in the process?
- I assume I have to knock the original ball race out of the top of the neck - how?
- Is there anything that has to be knocked out of the bottom of the neck?  I can tell yet.

Damn frame is already powder coated.  OTOH I have a full set of ball bearings from another triple.  Is it easiest to just go with balls at this point???  I have previously read that rollers are no big advantage for my street bike, especially if the balls aren't notch-y so I am not married to either setup and can go either way at this junction.

For me, the bearings are cheap enough I wouldn't screw around getting the old races out, I would just get a new set.  That said, you should be able to get them out and they will be fine.

Yes, both races will have to come out on the new frame.  Get a long punch and tap them out.  Just work your way around them as you go so they don't get too cocked.

:agree: I would just add that heat is your friend here. Warm the frame a bit around the race and it will come out more easily.
