Since buttoning up the rebuilt bike, I've got a problem with the left cylinder, it's only firing some of the time.
When the motor came out of the old bike it was running fine.
When I timed it in the new frame, I had plenty of spark, I never noticed it miss. Now when running it looks like the left cyl only fires some of the time. You can hear it in the video, and see it in the exhaust. If I put my hand behind the left can i get covered in unburnt fuel. Towards the end of the video you can hear it surging as the left fires properly.
Going out there today to try to solve it via the normal process of elimination....
FYI it's an R5, VS iggy.....
Plugs affirm fuel but no fire....

it almost sounds like your carbs aren't synchronized.
Great notion Joe, since I am running a brand new throttle cable.
Need to bone up on syncing them. Timing is re-checked and it's 1.9BDC (static) so I should be good there.

Thanks

The carb slides were definitely out of sync. The right slide lifted much sooner than the left. That's fixed.
The bike seems to idle on its own. I tried riding it but it still feels like it's running on "1", super bogged down without lots of revs. The left cylinder feels way less hot to the touch than the left after idling five minutes and a 100 yard attempted ride.
Someone recognize this behavior? It sits idling with occasional pops like the left suddenly sparks. I'm going to start swapping L/R parts such as coil, wires, etc...
Plug says no fire in the left hole. Hahaha I had enough power to go down the block and back (twice) on one cylinder.

CHECK COIL WIRING.
Yea Mark, I think that's the area. As I mess in there the symptoms change or go away.... too bad I'm out of time for today. I've had the tank on and off 10 times easy. Coils are swapped etc. at some point it runs like a raped ape and some points it dies out. So the consistent "right side only running" has changed as I worked under there.
On my next garage day I've got to re-re-re-sort the coil wiring......

you should really use a good quality ring terminal on the coil wires .. not the hard plastic home depot ones. . and tape them so they cant arc to the tank (the - side can) .02
So I've never seen arcing on my old bike BUT this is a different frame so maybe I am indeed arcing. A mm one way or another could make the difference I assume. That could explain why it fires up great without the tank, then I plumb the tank in for a test and I hit snags. I really need an aux fuel feed for this bs.
Thanks all for today.
yup.
id consider stock coil replacements, they have come a long way. :twocents:

Easy squeezy.
Pop bottle, cork, chunk of fuel line, T-fitting, coat hanger and/or string. Hangs from handlebar and takes about 5 minutes to make.
Don't need a lot of fuel, so cork will hold fine.
Can use cap too, but you'd need to use something to make the line press fit as it will leak. Hot glue does not work, don't try it unless you like globs of Napalm going into your carbs. Ask me how I know.

I am sure I have a bunch of Stock coils from my bad Dyna Pickup problem troubleshooting last year....Even new one's somewhere...will hunt them down..
I had that same issue on the same side with the VS ignition on my RD. Ended up being a bad pickup. I ended up going with the powerdynamo.
Old power equipment tanks, like lawn mowers, make good, easy remote fuel supplies
Peeps,
washing-up liquid bottle (or whatever you call them over there!!) is perfect, and free, and the fuel line pops straight onto the bottle nozzle.
hope that helps.
cheers

I have a very similar one I got years ago for like $15. I use it A LOT.
for the more frugal among us. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gas-Fuel-Petrol-Tank-With-Cap-For-49cc-47cc-ATV-Quad-Pocket-Bike-Pit-Dirt-Bike/163541707273?_trkparms=aid%3D1110009%26algo%3DSPLICE.COMPLISTINGS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D225074%26meid%3D9adae71d912741c2a1349b7c46606a15%26pid%3D100008%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D131391525811%26itm%3D163541707273%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3Ddefault%26brand%3DUnbranded&_trksid=p2047675.c100008.m2219
tbh, i have a homeade one from a sport drink bottle from like 15 years ago that wont die. i have a tube sealed in the bottom with yamabond and a briggs and stratton shut off valve. :dawg:

Yep the Vape/powerdynamo was probably the wisest money I spent on mine but for different reasons.
I have to say, ive run a bunch of dynas over the years, most are bullet proof. ive had 1 bad pickup out of the box, maybe 20 years ago on an old s unit. the biggest issue with them is not having the plated and pickups grounded correctly. and im going wayyy back to my cb750 days. I have seen those emgo coils take a shit wayyy more often, they are an old school oil filled design originally intended for British bikes. Good, but they are what they are.
he already said wiggling the wires near the coils causes it to come in and out. :twocents:
I had a bad pickup last year on my Dyna. I bought a new one for a Honda for $119 and grafted the pickup onto mine. I have the other new pickup should I need it. This appears to be a different problem...
I got a few hours today looking at it. Found multiple things, including that the Yambits throttle cable is just too short for the normal route. I rerouted on the right side of a the triple., I Hope ultimately I will be ok.
As for running. I rewired the Spec II coils entirely, new wire and connectors, I was still having problems with an intermittent spark.
I examined the wire doing up from the Dyna where it splices into the coil positive wires. I soldered the connection, and moved the clamp to the other brown coil wire to get a new connection. Still not running 100%.
Then I wired in the set of Emgo coils ( fairly new, only a few hours on them). The bike was running pretty well as seen in the video. BUT when I touch the red Dyna wire up near the coils the bike dies. Regardless of any other issues, this is a big one. I don't think there's a break in the wire, I sense it's that connector.
Has anyone tried putting a bullet connector on that wire and just plugged it into the open joining connector for the coil posiitives? Ie the brown wires... seems like it should work, that stupid pinch connector is just tapping the brown, why not do it with a bullet?
Bike running:
Highly suspect connection: why can't I just put a bullet male on the red and join with the browns in the connector just to the left?

OH YEAH, THAT ADD A SPLICE THING SUCKS. (i forgot those were in the kit)
methinks you found it.
actually, you can add a loop connector and some wire, and power it off the + side of the coil.
Right, so it's not inductive, it's just supplying + To the ignition. I'll put a connector on and power it from the Brown wire junction.
yup. thats your 12v in
Unbelievable (sort of). After three full garage days troubleshooting, I moved that stupid pinch connector over into a male bullet and joined it at the 4way brown for the coils. Bike is now running the way I expected, which is pretty perfect. I idled it for almost five minutes without ANY unusual surge, pop, bog etc. Took three laps around the block ( FIRST TIME this rebuilt frame is under my power) and it's running great. Since the chassis was 100% apart I need to take it careful and make sure the bike itself is good ( forks shocks etc etc) but now I can suit up and start the rip around shakedown.
( forget the sound quality)
