Don't see these often. -- https://www.ebay.com/itm/1983-Yamaha-RX50-/233647990840?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10
There's a reason why you don't see them very often.............they're stupid.
Ha, I am usually a sucker for the little bikes but I agree these don't exactly have a purpose. Even the YSR50 is really an under-powered machine but it at least has a cool factor.
THEY ARE STUPID. I had one, stuck a 100 motor in it, still kinda sucked. however, the the motor is shared with the ysr, so the hot rod stuff swaps.
Not only stupid but the one in the Ebay listing has issues
-no title, "Lemon & Manufacturer Buyback", replacement engine, aftermarket tank that needs prime/paint, "fussy to start with kickstart so I usually just push start it", turn signals don't work, missing sidecover and storage compartment lid

I stumbled on this last night, even more ridiculous for a bike we all agree is pretty stupid. He did note something that I have not heard before about how it was brought to the US, anyone else hear this?
originally the yamaha rx50 was made to be a raffle prize to promote the midnight special yamahas that were 5 speed highway cruisers, there were 1,500 made for the us market(as far as i know)

I think that is right
I too have heard that. but also a few were actually 'sold', usually as a package deal with another bike though. Ive heard this from at least one dealer in NC. Maybe it was an isolated case?
Friend of mine has one thats actually really nice, dead stock. He likes it. it does run well. but FFS its ugly.

I think that is probably true, A friend of mine did actually win one. I don't remember the details but I know it was a raffle.
My local dealer confided the fact that the "Specials ( 650, 850 and 1100) " were languishing too long on the showroom floor! Yamaha grossly over produced them and invented all kinds of sales gimmicks, including the RX raffle if you bought one................D
