Title: Wire question, moto gadget, powerdynamo ignition
Post by: rd400greenhorn on July 18, 2020, 11:42:06 AM
Yeah so

The moto gadget speedo, it says in the manuel, yellow wire goes to negative pole ( clamp 1 or -) at one ignition coil.

Which is that on this ignition coil?

I assume its the yellow or White

And my blue wire is a neutral wire, where do I connect that to?

I have a powerdynamo ignition.

you may run into issues, BUT, you can trigger the tach from the pickup wire, or should be able to.

hook the N wire to the neutral switch terminal at the engine case.

Yeah so i can trigger the tach from the speedo by touching ground / frame. But thats just the yellow wire going from the tach. I already know this is the wire for showing revs.

But Which wire going from the ignition coil do I connect to the yellow wire from the speedo :umm:

And the blue wire is a wire i made going from the neutral 'switch' at the engine, but I dont know where do I connect it to, so the speedo shows when iam in neutral :)

Since the Powerdynamo is a CDI and the Motogadget most likely is set up for battery powered ignition,  you may struggle. I suggest you contact Motogadget. (Powerdynamo used to state that they would not guarantee any elektronisk tach would be compatible.)

my spa was the same way, as was the vapor. it works.  the pickup trigger is the safest bet, there's no real voltage and zero way to hurt the ignition or tach connecting there.
I went thru this with the tach on the grom, triggering it off the 1985 LT250 motor.  did the same thing, triggered the factory honda tach off the pickup on the factory suzuki pickup and it works
it may need a ferrite choke or rf drain, but try it first. like said, zero risk there.

do NOT trigger it off the kill wire or the charge coil wire. you'll def fry some stuff (the tach) that way. also, if you are running a zeel box, it won't trigger of the back side of that, has to be the pickup wire from the motor.

you can also trigger it off one of the ac charge wires. but you have to set the tach to like 12cyl or something. (if its an option). did that on the spa for a while as well.

My Acewell gauge has the option to get the tach pickup by wrapping the yellow wire around a spark plug HT lead.

You would have to check the moto gadget wiring diagram to find the neutral connection, if it has that option.
