Title: Banshee billet intakes for RD's?
Post by: Hawaii-Mike on July 19, 2020, 10:46:26 PM
Is this billet intake manifold a worthwhile upgrade for an RD or just bling? https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Yamaha-Banshee-YFZ350-Billet-Intake-28-30mm-Fit-Al-Year/251198586338?epid=1859876007&hash=item3a7c9a3de2:g:VnUAAMXQsmFRfgKn

Seems like it would lengthen the intake tract...

it does move it quite a bit. i have one, not currently using it. it moves it back about 1/2 an inch.

They work well if you are going to bigger carbs to get clearance for the bowls.

Be careful which one you buy. A lot of them come with Chinese carb boots that are almost impossible to get sealed.
Look for one that has genuine Mikuni boots.

^ HES RIGHT.

I got mine from chariot i think, held up well however, moving the carbs back that far also gives the added issue of fitting filters, especially on a 350 frame, probably not as much on a 400 frame as the rails are wider. My bike ran well with it though.  :twocents:

Do you have to put the intake on before you torque the cylinders?

nope

I just imagine some misalignment in the intake faces resulting in the manifold not sealing to the cylinders. Makes me kind of nervous. I explored making a set for myself, but just never got around to it.

nope. i had it installed on the lc, & the lightweight no sealing or alignment issues.  :toot:

FWIW - I get the concern about misalignment because Banshee and RZ cylinders are doweled to the case so they can't really be misaligned. ACRD cylinders are not doweled so you COULD get some misalignment I suppose, although I think it would be minimal, but what you could do before torquing the cylinders is install the billet intake and lightly snug up the mounting bolts/screws enough to at least align the intake mounting surfaces but leave them loose enough so the cylinders can move independently of each other when torquing them. Once the cylinders are torqued then go back and properly tighten the intake bolts/screws. That will have to be close enough.

If it is the intake with the internal crossover you are more likely to get a leak somewhere on the internal oring

the one i have, the oring groove is really deep and the o ring is pretty big. i wouldn't worry about it.

Those definitely have Chinese rubber boots.
