What's your favorite lube for the points cam on ignitions without the felt pads for oil?
nothing will last without it but id use some marine grease. a tiny amount.
What about brake pad/caliper pin grease? Hi-temp, but sticky enough? I'm gonna try it unless I can find my can of white lithium grease.
Auto part stores have distributor cam lube in small tubes.
Do you like the Lucas Red and Sticky?
FSM specifies "light weight machine oil" for RD400c. To me, that indicates sewing machine oil or 3in1 oil. I have Singer sewing machine oil that I use.
If you have the oiling felt the thin oil is fine.

Did the factory get rid of the felt pads on the 250? I didn't see any evidence of there ever having been any on the ignition plate I'm using. No holes or anything. Just a bunch of red grease on the cam.
My usual parts store says they'll have to order distributor grease. Went to the next town over and they didn't have any either. boo hoo hoo. I guess all the locals jus' git it off the innerwebs.
Bosch points grease. What I've used on VW points for years.

Which 250? RD250? If yours are missing someone removed them, probably when they replaced points. They were stock on all RD models and predecessor models.
Yamaha 131-81231-20-00 LUBRICATOR (No Longer Available)
If the kid behind the parts counter doesn't know what points are...... don't be surprised.
I looked again and found the holes for felts. I may change my user name to numpty.
keep in mind, an rd points cam spins a LOT faster than a car one. a car one will see maybe 2500 rpm (if you wind up the motor to 5k). an rd one can see 8-10k. it will sling the grease off.
Greg, there are some NOS Yamaha felts on Ebay but they're not cheap

You mean: Numpty, there are some NOS...
I'm working my way toward earning the capital "n". I ask all the stoopid questions, twice, so others don't have to!
I prob have this stuff laying around. been busy lately but ill try to dig into my ign stuff see if I can find one
I robbed a set of felts off of another unit so I'm all set, for now. I'll buy another set off ya for the next one down the line though.
nice.
I always knew about the mineral oil on the felts. I took an ignition off of a 250 parts motor and there were not felts on it, just a bunch of reddish brown grease on the cam. So, being a trusting fool decided that must be an ok way to do it, right?
I thought abotu this last night. we picked up a vintage fan over the weekend and it needs rewiring and servicing. upon taking the motor apart, there are -two- oiling ports on top, which lead down to a felt that is in front of a bronze spherical bushing the motor shaft rotates in. that thing is almost 75 years old, and in great shape. the oil had just dried out but zero signs of shaft wear. :twocents:
