Title: 1979 RD400 Daytona - Sprocket Question
Post by: KANDY on December 13, 2021, 09:00:03 AM
Hi All,
1979 Daytona Special. I have both 15 and 17 Front Sprocket and 38 rear. May I know which is better for Street riding.
A pros and cons from you guys would have been nice.

Stock gearing is as follows:
RD400F (3J7) Canada - 38/17
RD400F (2V0) USA     - 37/17

A drop of 2 teeth on the front will increase acceleration at the expense of top speed. It will also be more wheelie prone. If you're just riding around town, going down 1 or 2 teeth on the front would be fine. If you do highway riding or long runs on the freeway, you'd want to stay with the OEM gearing.

Gear ratios
38/17 = 2.23
38/15 = 2.53
