Title: Well crap.. Transmission issue or shift drum issue? RD 350 UPDATED. 4-30
Post by: Fastash on April 25, 2019, 05:12:08 PM
Well I was getting really close to finishing my build and went to double check some things and when. Shifting the bike I cannot find neutral and in one gear the engine will only rotate about 90 degrees and stops with a firm stop.? I just don't get it? I am 99% sure of the transmission install but could it be the shift drum? I am at a total loss, I have done numerous transmission issues bent forks etc. But obviously I have screwed something up this time. I am actually sick over it! I certainly don't want to take it down to the cases again but if I must I will.. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ashley

Just to clarify that I was rotating the engine by turning the clutch basket.

I think you're going to have to split the cases. It can only be a couple of things but no way to really know without splitting the cases.

Today I put my trans together and had the star shaped shift drum cam on backwards.

Before the stopper plate was screwed down to hold the shift drum, the change cam slid over a tad and the cam stopper got off of the cam. The result was what you describe, or similar. If you take the change cam stopper out of the case bottom, and reinstall it, that may help. Worth a try, IMO. :twocents:  while it's out, check the shift mechanism, and see that the drum is completely inserted.
