Before I jam a screwdriver down the lock, does anyone have a great tip on how to open the gas cap without having a key? The cap is rusty, it's not worth buying a key to match the original lock.
I watched a Youtube video describing how to open Yamaha tank caps, it looked similar to the RD400 cap. I was unable to get a screwdriver under the cap to push the latch as shown in the video.
Ideas please?
a thin metal shim might work. or, a key jiggler might work.

Could also order a key off ebay cut to match the number on the lock.
This worked!
haha
I didn't want to spend hours figuring out hot to MacGyver it. This took a few minutes to complete.
He Bidened it!
Yes I released it. Once the tab is uncovered (see what the arrow is pointing to) it can easily be pushed to open the tank.
There's a video on Youtube showing (I think) an SR500 where someone was able to push that tab without hacking the gas cap. No ways I could do that. The tab was fully covered with the cap locked.
in the future if you want to save the gas cap and get it opened you can order a key off of this guy on Ebay for $15 including shipping.

All he needs is the make and model and the key number usually found on the gas cap or seat lock I've also used his service in the past for bikes that I bought that had no titles and no keys
I've bought some keys from that guy. I get them in the mail only to find out he lives like two blocks from my mom. Next time I might message him to see if I can stop by instead of get them mailed.
Anyways, the keys work great and the guy is a good resource. I wish I had known about him when I built my 350 because I didn't have working keys for it.
Thanks for the link! That gas cap was toast, I just wanted to get it off the gas tank.
