Title: HPI
Post by: gargantua350 on March 29, 2022, 05:43:01 PM
Hi There guys:

I have purchased the HPI and plan to run AC volts only with a regulator.

The question I have is the run/stop mode of the HPI.  I understand by grounding to the frame the black/white wire will shut off the engine.  My current ignition switch is stock and the off position is open.  If I attach the frame ground to the common of the ignition switch, it will have the opposite result.  In the off position, the CDI is enabled.

Would it be ok to run the orange coil wire thru the ignition switch?  That way in the off position, it will be open in the off position and the coil will be disabled.

thx

no. its high voltage.  use the trigger wire. i -believe- thats the white wire in the kit on the 3 prong connector.

I hooked mine up to the oem switch on the handlebar and it works like you said, off is on and on is off. I used the red/white wire from the ballast resistor that goes right to that switch and unhooked the brown wire from the switch because that is the 12 volts hot lead. Then instead of the brown wire being attached to the switch I ran that brown, from the switch, to ground.

Hello,

So you hooked it up to the run/stop not the ignition switch correct?

I'm thinking I will switch the trigger wire thru the ignition switch or worst case find a keyswitch that is normally closed in the off position(key pulled).  I had similiar problem sourcing one for a DT250 and I found a keyswitch from digikey electronics but I had to make an adapter.

thanks for the advise guys.

Yeah, might be the best way. On one of my bikes, I have a regular push button kill button on the bars... but a hidden one under the seat to kill if i leave it anywhere unattended that grounds the coil (regular spst on off switch). wont fire w out it being 'on'.

I went back into the other HPI threads and pulled the below concerning the black/white wire coming off the coil. Is the statement below only good when using the relay for DC systems? It seems like the setup would be very similar to the vape system using the one wire off the coil to shut it down. I was planning to install my HPI system wired similar to the Vape system I have.

CDI black/white...? To be used as a kill wire for coil, connect to a toggle switch then to frame ground connection or kill button that then goes to frame ground connection for closed to ground for engine kill. Like a dirtbike button. You can also wire in a bosch 5 pin relay to run on the stock ignition switch.

relay will work.. if theres a battery installed. has to have that initial voltage to trip it, of course.

I'm not sure a RZ350 key switch will fit properly on a RD but it has a CDI shut down circuit in it. If so, that would work if you want it to shut off with the key and not have to use a relay that needs a battery to work.

KAW triples as well.

Yeah,  I looked at the  sw schematic for both the RZ and Kawasaki triple and they will both work.  Thanks for the info guys.  which probably means that any enduro type of that era with a mag or CDI will have a simular ignition switch i assume?  I might just go the toggle switch route.

thx

i would say yes, anything with a cdi should work.
