I know what it is .. I am seeing 2-4k depending on the type and level of work.
My question is that with current inflation and increases in every aspect of purchase power will you be willing to continue building bikes in whatever desirable level you are comfortable?
Just throwing this out there.
Well, over here in the UK, many, many people are in a real pinch with the cost of living, etc.
My experience of that is nil, (as far as the guys I deal with are concerned). They are still very willing to pay money out for bike related stuff.
A new dish washer might be a different matter!
Leasure activities seem more important than ever.

2-3 k was the norm for the past 4-5 years or so depending who did the work and what was done. rebuild parts haven't gone up that much at all due to the economy, but more due to outlandish prices people are willing to pay for mediocre bikes. labor rate had gone up a bit, but not that much.
Hmmm at 3k for a rebuild makes the rebuilt R5 engine at a "Nebraska two stroke company", which is selling for $4000 all done, plus 250 shipping and minus $700 for your core sound reasonable, with no waiting etc...
neither is 'reasonable' if you can do your own work. paying to get it done is ridiculous IMHO. But, it takes time. so think, 10 hours total at 100 bucks an hour is 1/3 the cost. this of course includes clean up, blasting cases, painting, drop in ready to go. my old RZ motor was billed at 2600 bucks rebuilt back well over 10 years ago.. stock rebuild and they still fucked the oil pump up & reused a water pump bearing and seal which failed on startup.... the parts aren't any more expensive for the most part, either. (i received the motor in a trade fwiw) :twocents:
Yes, this depends on how much work someone was willing to do themselves.
If I could afford to just restore UJM bikes form the 70's for 2-3 clients a year, I'd LOVE to do it. But, I'm not a millionaire who could eat any losses. It sucks, but the handful of people doing legitimate work are only doing so because they have established businesses doing other things at the same time.
My last three Yamaha twin rebuilds averaged about $1200 labor. I did a lot of the work, sourced and procured the parts and started with viable cores( not blown up, or seized). My motor guy is pretty savvy. If parts are within spec we go with them ( I'm not going racing), if not, they're replaced. I use genuine Yamaha when ever I can. I'm usually at 1800 to 2200 ready to go.
