Title: 79 XS400S Crossover Parts to RD's
Post by: rlgrantjr on May 20, 2022, 10:44:01 AM
So, I've got a 79XS400S that was gifted to me as a non-runner with no title. I had thoughts of getting it running but the S model is too funky for me.  I'm also out of room to store it.  So I'm going to strip it for the parts I can use and give away or sell the rest.  I've got all the obvious chassis stuff off of it, but wonder if any of the transmission parts cross over.  Anyone happen to know?  I already have the clutch fibers and steels, clutch pushrod and neutral switch cover off of it.

Thanks!

I didn't think they made an S (Heritage) model in '79. I thought the S model was only 80 & 81. I believe '79 was only the standard F model and the 2F.
I looked up a few trans pieces for the XS400SG and most of the parts I checked (gears, trans axles, etc) only crossed over with XS360 & XS400 models
The shift shaft is the same as the R5/RD250/350/400CDE
Shift forks are the same as RD250/350/400CDEF

Thank You Sir!

I called it an S when it's actually the Special with the funky bars and seat.  It kind of bugs me to tear it to pieces but parts is parts.

If it's a '79 model does it have cast wheels or spoked?
Cast = XS400F
Spoked = XS400-2F

The cast front wheel from the F model is the same as the RD400F except that it has provisions for a dual disc (hidden under a plastic cover).
Also the Front and rear brake discs are the same as the Daytona.
The shift cam and forks are same as RD250/350/400CDEF

The front fender is not exact but it should work for an RD400.

pretty sure they use 33mm forks, at least the later ones did.

where are you located? i actually know somebody looking for an xs400 motor in decent shape.

This has the cast wheels, disk on front, drum on rear, with 33mm forks.  I'm in Beavercreek Ohio, close to Dayton.  The speedo says 12015 miles.  The motor is not stuck, but I believe the starter chain broke as it's gone.  Looks like it rattled around a bit, there's small marks on the stator windings and I think it finally bound up as the the crankcase cover is cracked.

If you find this on it, (self cancelling signal module) and have an inclination that it works, let me know. They are on eBay used for $30 to $40 and NOS for $175.
Probably hiding near the steering tube structure under the tank.
