Title: Rare import?
Post by: dgorms on September 19, 2022, 09:09:12 PM
I thought they were all imports!                    https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/mcy/d/bellingham-vintage-79-yamaha-rd-400/7535751494.html

Probably means the bike was imported from Canada or something.
It is super clean, Id be scared to go near it in case I scratched something.

Pretty sure that is a Canadian 3J7 model, with the different left cover for the ignition pick up.

it looks TOO restored for me. They were never that clean, even brand new.
... and they went to the trouble of replacing or re" zincing" all the fasteners... then put socket head screws in the side covers.

Pretty nice looking bike.

If it's a 3J7 the speedo has been replaced. If it's a 2V0 the carbs have been replaced and exhaust butterfly valve removed.
(By the way, the left engine covers are the same between 3J7 and 2V0 models.)

Rotors have been drilled. Cylinder head has been polished as well as the fork lowers.
And while we're nitpicking, the left hand rear tank damper rubber is not assembled correctly. And the seat looks a little overstuffed.

Based on Speedo, it is a USA model.
As the 3J7's had KPH for there outer numbers

As mentioned, Both 3J7 & 2V0 covers had the extra space for the CDI, even tho the 2V0 did not need it.

So definitely missing the butterfly & stock carbs.
But I heard the stock carbs are for the garbage anyway.

Where did the downpipes come from then?

I have a similar 2V0 bike for sale, up on FB
Has HVC exhaust and early 400 carbs, about 7500 miles on it.

Needs some mirrors too.
But nice looking bike
