Title: Kicking myself for not keeping good records 84 RZ350
Post by: Kawtriplefreak on December 08, 2022, 08:30:09 PM

I am kicking myself for not keeping good records. I put an R6 cooling fan on my 1st 84 RZ350 and wanted to buy one for my 2nd 84 RZ350. But I didnt write down what year the fan came from. I found a cheap one on eBay for a 99-02 R6 and it is too thick to fit in the space. It has 5 big fan blades whereas the one on my 1st RZ is thinner and has 12 small blades. I am thinking 2003 to 2006 and the ones I am finding in that year range appear to be correct I but am seeking confirmation from someone who knows. Thank you

Pretty sure I read on a thread somewhere that a 06 / 07 fan was installed.

I don't claim to be an expert on this topic as I've never done the fan swap, but looking at the parts fiche and comparing photos it appears these are the 3 common parts:

Early 6-blade, fits 1999-2002 (single fan)
5EB-12405-00-00

7-blade, fits 2003-2005 (dual fans)
5SL-12405-10-00 Left
5SL-12405-20-00 Right

Later 12-blade 10-blade, dual fans, fits 2006 to current (dual fans)
2C0-12405-00-00 Left
2C0-12405-10-00 Right

EDIT - revised fan blade count for 2C0- parts

Thanks. I will count the blades carefully on the one on my white RZ and report back. Looks like 2006 and up.

I replied on the RZ forum also.

08-14 is what I used. 06-07 might be the same.

You may want to consider this upgrade also. Yes, I have subsequently put shrink tube on those lugs. One of the fuses is for the fan. I wired in a manual switch for the R6 fan.

I wired my fan in with a manual switch and a thermo switch that goes between the rad fins.

yup, good idea.

i used a derale adjustable unit but same idea, with an over ride switch if for some reason i needed it.

on the lc, used an automotive thermal switch to control the ground, and used an inline temp sensor for the temp gauge. (on the hose above the head, not in pic).  The fan i used was an SPAL though, 4 1/2" I think.

Not sure why an RZ needs a fan, but I just noticed that the hybrid has what looks like a brand new TZ water pump.  Mine are all ground down and scored after sliding up the road with a bike on top of them.

Nice adaptation.  Did you weld up a boss on the side cover for it to sit on?  I had an adapter plate from a kart mounted TZ/RD hybrid that I used on our RD cases, TZ top end and wet clutch drag race motor.

made an adapter out of 6061.
its a total bolt on so i can replace the cover with a stock aircooled one if need be.
thats been on for 18 years, its been slid on once. I bought it from rick mehar back in 04 needing a rebuild.
thanks

as for as an rz needing a fan.. or the lc... they really -dont- but its nice to have in traffic on very hot days. more of an insurance policy than anything.  I think my fan on the lc has kicked in 1 or 2 times ever.

RZ needing a fan? What he said^^^^ You can probably live without it. Normal riding the temperature gauge needle is typically in the middle. They tend to get quite hot if you manage to get into traffic. Also my typical weekend fix takes me from 600 feet elevation to about 4200 feet and sometimes do this in hot weather. The needle will climb a bit going uphill pushing it a bit. Turning on the fan brings the needle back to the middle. Nice peace of mind for me.

That adapter is way more elegant than the three bolt one I used.

Got a fan from a 2012 on the way. Thanks to all for the help. I will also order a new universal manual switch for the LH frame rail under the tank like the one on my white RZ.

If you need any confirmation I have an 05 R6 that I can measure if needed.

Thanks DJG
I have one on my other RZ. The error on the initial order for this one stems from my lack of record keeping resulting in me ordering an early R6 fan. I have a later year on the way and I just ordered a universal two wire off on switch from Cycle Gear.

2012 R6 fan arrived today. I put 12 volts to it and it works like a champ.  :metal:
(https://i.postimg.cc/kXh95hJY/20221214-131419.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/LnfGCDZj)

I also verified it will fit into the space between the frame rails and clear everything. I will mount it with two Adel clamps like I did on the white RZ. The manual on/ off switch I ordered from Cycle Gear ($20 shipped) will be here in a few days.

go auto, and use a bar switch as a backup. my suggestion.

can you measure how many amps that fan draws? I have a GSXR fan in my 421 that pulls over 6 amps and is quite heavy on the charging system.
Title: Re: Kicking myself for not keeping good records 84 RZ350

I have never measured current draw on mine. If you look at the fuse block photo I posted earlier you will see I am running a 15 amp fuse. I have had that fan mounted on that bike for about eight years or so and never blown fuse. (Maybe it only needs a 10 amp fuse?) No problems with charging either running it full-time for about a one hour or so ride.
