I am looking for some recommendations for rattle can spray paint and primer in a semi gloss/satin black. This is for a RD frame/swingarm and some small parts. I would go with something a little better than spray cans but I think there may be some small welding that may have to be done after the fact (shit I forgot to do) and want to be able to touch up fairly easily.
Also what are you doing for prep on frames before paint? It is the typical look from the 70s, a mix of paint, rust and grease. Paint stripper and sandpaper? Having it media blasted?
Media blasting is going to be better than chemical strip. It'll prep the surface better.
My frame was sand blasted and baked before it was powder coated.

I use PJ1 on almost everything.
I use VHT epoxy paint in a can. A lot more durable than the regular rattle can stuff.
I use Dupli-Color Engne Enamel.
It's fuel resistant, cheap and tough and I can get it at the O'Reilly's down the street from my house
^ same here but i think they have reformulated. have had really, really good luck with the dupli color caliper paint. that stuff rules. the gloss kinda sucks, but the semi and flat are spot on.
:twocents:
I have never found duplicolor engine paint to be fuel resistant. Always had to have my tanks cleared in polyurethane.

Yep. It won't hold up. But polyurethane will definitely hold up against it. The only issue is that it will yellow from the UV/time

The 2K max and diamond hard won't.......

fyi, ive used engine clear and wheel clear on tanks. wax it after, fuel resistant for sure. spray max is hands down the best though. :cheerleader:

Thanks for the replies. How many cans are we talking to paint a frame? 2 enough?
2 is more than enough, but get 2 just in case

I just finished painting my engine covers with the PJ1 satin. Looks like a dead on match to me for factory.
Might be a little late on my reply, hell, I'm late even getting back on to this forum
I am restoring a '78 RD400 right now, and I have been using Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy. It is very hard, shiny, and is pretty nice looking. I have been soaking everything since I remove them in mineral spirits, sand and steel wool, then paint a couple coats. I think it's going to look real nice

Which part(s) did you paint? Chemical resistant?

The parts I'm painting with the appliance epoxy are mainly the frame parts. Battery box, brake mounts, rear peg mounts, chain guard, frame itself, you know stuff like that. Been letting it sit at least a day or two cuz it's pretty tacky paint.
