So, I finally got to the bottom of my running issues on this R5.It seemed to be smoothed out but still didn't seem 100%.
I did a leak down (I know...Should have done it before anything) but I always think, oh they won't be bad.
The RH seal was leaking air all around. I ordered one from eBay (looked to be the soonest shipping one). This seal is so large in diameter it was a bitch to install. Then I go to fit the gear and the shaft is not pushing in. The inner seal is way too small. I tried to lube but to no avail.
What source has reliable close to stock fitting seals?

look for other parts as well as shipping isnt bad but doesn't go up with small add ons. should be in your hands in a week or less.
john at economy used to carry r5 seals but i didnt see them. you can use an rd seal if you feel like taking the center rib off.
Phuck, I just received an order from them dammit. Ordered on Monday 7-03 and had parts in my hands on Thursday 7-05. They're amazingly expedient. Way better than most US vendors.
I must note that I hate when sellers have the shit part with a Yamaha part# label with it. I msg the seller, we'll see what happens.
Nice I see that the RD seals are still available form Yamaha. Whats the best way to take the rib down? Grind off, or cut?
honeslty, and this is def not recommended but does work, i usually let it spin on my finger against the grinding wheel until the rib is gone, gently. then blow it off with air. however, i would recommend a steady hand with an exacto if this makes you feel uneasy. and im one of the guys that uses yamabond on new seals. :twocents:
I think I will get the RD one. I am pretty good with my hands. I have a fresh tube of Yamabond also.
Steady hand with my die grinder should do it.
id avoid a die grinder, real easy to cut a notch in it, but thats just my opinion. but, good luck w it. as a side note, i always order 2 sets of seals when i order them just incase something goes wrong on installation. got bit by that once, and now i always have a spare on hand.
Good idea
I ordered this kit from economycycle.com
https://www.economycycle.com/shop/yamaha-rd250350400r5ds6ds7-parts/engine-related/gasketsseals-engine/mocom-engine-oil-seal-kit-for-yamaha-r5ds7/
i didnt see that. thats (one of) the ones ive ordered in the past.
Good option, thanks
Does John send the parts quickly? I am an impatient MF
Although I may just order from my local dealer. I also need crank seals for my AT1.

I ordered 57 parts in bulk last Friday... they shipped it Monday it showed up Yesterday
Fast enough I'd say.
Has anyone come across R5 crank seals that do not fit? The RH one in particular. The one I have is too large and the ID is too small for the gear to fit.
never
I haven't done a lot of crank seals so I just assumed that I would have received the correct one. The OD was close but would not just push in a bit. I now have the size of that seal 40x62x10 and will always check from now on.

LH side is ignition side (no gear)
Both the RD OEM and R5 aftermarket LH crankseals are marked
20-40-10 (ID,OD,W)
Both install numbers out

Keep in mind they're rubber seals and there will be some stiction on both sides. Might take a little push when installingon on the crank and gear. You can lube with a little oil if needed, but I've done it many times dry as with all the RD/R5 engine seals. Do not use liquid gasket or yamahabond on them. :twocents:
Correct. I had my sides incorrect. I meant RH side.
The seal I received from the seller was 62 38 10. Thats why it was impossible to install the gear that is 40mm. I assumed that I would receive the correct part.
hey mods, for some reason the pictures I posted disappeared, they were hosted links from my google drive
I see them
:umm:
