Title: Ebay Carb Boots
Post by: Erik the Bike Man on May 30, 2024, 02:48:37 PM
Just got my '71 R5 back together after sitting blown up for almost 6 years.  Failed a leakdown test with TONS of air dumping out the intake boots.
These are the cheapo boots off ebay.
Spent a couple extra bucks on the ones that EconomyCycle carries.  The originals I have show zero signs of dry rot, but they are hard as a rock.

Take your originals & soak them in ArmorAll for a few days.
See if they soften.
I have also soaked them in brake fluid.
They soften up, then soak in ArmorAll after.

Get some wintergreen oil and acetone and soak 'em to soften them up...

I've been soaking some of my "non-essential" parts in 303 and it seems to be softening them up a bit.

@ John, had a hard time finding these (didn't actually..). I searched for 'intake' though.

under the manifold section in fuel and air or use search box at top of screen and search for R5 manifold, will come right up.

Thanks!  I was semi active on here around 2013 or so and just made my new account.

Economy Cycle does have them.  They're in and working great.
My originals perhaps could be softened up, but the sealing flange surface is eaten away to nothing.  No way I'd ever trust them.

And another question I had answered!  I didn't see the Mikuni logo molded into them like the originals, but the numbers are there.
Thanks!
