Title: Super Easy (and cheap) Rear Set Discovery
Post by: Yamanatic on December 27, 2024, 11:08:09 AM
Brought the 'Rear Set Shifter' to Haus of Projects since that is what it is!

After diddling with a down-and-dirty way of adapting an RZ350 shifter linkage onto a '73RD, a few issues came up that required some cutting, welding, and lathe-work. But first, a genuine Yamaha front Heim joint was needed to keep it clean, and avoid a bulky 'hardware store' quality fabrication - queue up eBay.

Looking through a ton of shifter linkages I finally discovered an OEM setup off a 1987 FJ1100 that looked like it may fill in the blanks. I just needed the fitting with Heim to go on the shift-shaft, but decided to buy an entire used linkage in the event I could use the other parts if necessary; the setup looked very similar to the RZ's.

Mistermonkeyclaw had a nice (un-crashed) linkage that cost $29 total, and was here in 3 days! I held it up to the RZ parts, and the shift-lever was dimensionally identical, so just for grins I bolted the entire FJ linkage on, and it fit perfectly, with NO mods whatsoever! I had to pinch myself, and it was not a dream!

The pivot-shaft threaded right into the lower frame bracket mounting hole, plenty of side-cover clearance for the shift-shaft knuckle, and the adjuster screw with the L/H threads fit like it was made for the RD. This is a 100% bold-on setup, and it works like a charm. Here are a couple pictures:

That looks really good, now what are you doing for a foot peg?

Hey Joe!
An early TZ folding footpeg will soon be behind the shifter. One hole should do it!

I'm going to shorten the rear brake pedal arm, and install another folding TZ peg to allow clearance for the kicker on the off-side:

Yes the frame is a TD3, but the rear wheel was RD.  Brake pedal I welded up from a few simple components and the cable was Suzuki GT750. CB160 rear cable would probably work too.

Easy to replicate should you so desire.

I've had these forever and will never use- would be happy to move any or all to a good home. Not sure of peg application. Have a couple more pix. Message me if interested.

Good job on the rear brake - it definitely has a Fontana look! I hear you about the cables; other than being super rare, OEM TD/TR rear cables are pricey. Is that going to be a track or a street bike? Sorta looks like numbers on that fiberglass piece in the back...

Edit - found the web page with the whole bike and full rundown; bet it was a fun ride =)

Those look like vintage Anderson pegs, except with holes instead of ribs. I had an almost identical set on a 250 Ducati racer too many years ago. I remember they said Anderson on the underside of the blades. May need a set in the future though; a set of stubby TZ pegs are going on the RD - I need a long mounting shaft to line up the peg with the shifter offset.

Thanks Warren, and Yes, it was an actual TD3 with TD cases IIRC and a TZ250B IIRC frame plus NOS swingarm, TZ crank and TD3 top end.  The fairing in the background is hanging from my garage roof now. but back then it was on a TZ350E that I sold to a guy in TX.

FZR600 rear sets are an easy install, as well.  That's what I installed on mine.  The peg stems are the fulcrum for the levers.

:stupid-1: I'm using FZ600 parts on a couple of my projects. Readily available, inexpensive and pleasing to my eye.

The RD is finally some new gas lines and a good tuning from going up for sale. I'm pleased with the way it turned out, and has been a really fun project.

The 260mm DTLS is a vintage 'Pender' high quality reproduction and fresh out of the box. He produced hundreds of these, including other obsolete Yamaha alloy parts; the company has a solid reputation. Front fork legs are R5 with the correct lugs for the brake. Front rim, spokes, and cables are also new Pender. Rear rim is a NOS/OEM 1969 Yamaha TR2 hoop. New Avons and UNI foam filters.

The complete working stock disk front end, hydraulics, and rear rim go with the bike in the event a future owner wants to put it back to original - the only destructive modifications were to the passenger peg brackets and the rear brake pedal.

The bike only has 9630 miles and is mostly original beyond the obvious. DG pipes, drop bars, and barely functional passenger-peg rear sets were on it when acquired; the stock exhaust also came with the bike, but the right muffler is moderately (eyesore) scuffed. No stock driver pegs, no center stand, and no turn signals.

If there are no gas leaks it should be ready for detailing soon - had it running last fall. Still up in the air about price.

jut out of curiosity, how much was that front drum setup

Not cheap. The bare brake was $1850 shipped (separate crate) plus $225 more for the rim and spokes. The cables and splitter came to about $150 total from the UK. The complete conversion including YDS type perch and brake light switch (correct TD/TZ style perches have no switch provision) and used R5 fork legs, was about $2500.

Disco Volante and Ligh Speed in Poland both show similar replicas for about the same money, but both alternatives are NLA.

Here are the finished rear sets. The brake lever bend and fold-up peg allows the kick lever full travel without interference:
