Title: RZ Carbs
Post by: Twill864 on March 31, 2025, 08:30:46 AM
This is an ex WERA bike that I've put back on the road. I've never done much mechanically to it besides replaces the rounded off through-bolted shift shaft and put tires on it.

Anyways, the bike is starving for fuel, the second you try to get out of first gear it runs out of gas. I'm gonna tear down the carbs and the petcock and to make sure nothing is crusty as it sat since 08 (drained). I have a spare set of carbs tore down and cleaned already just want to swap brass over.

What's the best/easiest way to get the carbs detached from the cables? I'm not used to this type of setup. Figure I'd just ask before messing with it. Pic for attention day I bought it.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250331/007e87a68a25bd91553ebaf4c9ff459b.jpg)

I do recall someone using a raptor petcock or did Cary at RZ's unlimited sell something?

I keep looking at this and thinking it might work. Anyone have experience with a TZR125 non-vacuum petcock bolting right in?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/356668611721?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=4rdBxqgyRIa&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=7egArasDSuy&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

If there's half a chance, I might try it out.

I'll pull it off and go take some measurements. Now that I think about it. My petcock doesn't have a vacuum line connected. Maybe it's already been modified or maybe the PO didn't know what they were doing.... The PO wasn't the guy who raced it.

I put an RD 400 petcock on both of my RZs. Dual outlet no vacuum. Bolts right on and it is easy to adapt it to work with the factory knob.

I have a RD400 petcock on mine too, no mods to it.

I also installed RD400 petcock when I had my RZ. Also experimented a little with RD350 stock carbs on there.

I like that conversion petcock that RZ's Unlimited offers but man that price is a bitter pill to swallow.

Its not just the petcock you have to buy at a shade under $200, but then you have to buy an extension piece to make it reasonably original looking and thats an additional $75.

Bought the TZR125 petcock for $20-something on eBay.
It didn't look good at first. Could have been a couple millimeters lower and could have had a longer extension on the knob shaft to reach out of the side cover hole. The feed barb faces out the back, but it still works.

Has the same familiar positions as the RD400 unit.

Any pics of it with the side cover installed?

As you can see, it is more recessed and a little high. Certainly easy enough for me to turn it though. I'm going with it for now. Would be cool to mix and match parts, but no good plan has materialized.

Thank you for the additional pics, it doesn't look too far off honestly.

May be worth it for the better performing petcock and peace of mind.

It bothered me that the original petcock would continually drip really slow when I would pull the tank. It was epoxy-modded. so reserve was not a thing anymore.

If you have the OG petcock and there's no vacuum line, it probably has epoxy in the the rotating stem passageway.

There's a thread above from Kawtriplefreak where he did a splendid job working out an RD400 lever style petcock to make it work with an RZ knob. Probably lined up just right. I took the lazy boy route.
