Title: Yamaha RD125 footrest fix
Post by: SoCal250 on April 09, 2025, 12:53:24 PM
Yesterday's task was fixing the loose footrest assembly that's been bugging me for a few years. Ever since I bought the bike the pegs have wiggled around more than they should. I had kept putting it off because at first glance the bolts holding the footrest onto the mounting bracket appeared difficult to access and are oriented pointing down, with the heads just under the engine case.

After studying the parts diagram I found that the entire assembly should come out with just a couple bolts. The RD125 and RD200 design allows the footrest to be removed without much effort and the engine and other parts can stay in place, as well as the center stand.

All that is needed to remove the footrest:
-remove the left muffler
-remove the M8 x 20 bolt on the mounting bracket left side, towards the rear (mine had a nut on the back which is not shown in the parts diagram)
-remove the long M8 bolt (with spacer) that runs through the bracket on the left side and threads into the frame on the opposite side. For some reason this bolt is not shown in any of the parts diagrams (at least that I could find).

The two bolts I removed can be seen on the cardboard in the photo below. The smaller one was extremely loose and allowed the entire bracket to shift on the frame.

Once the two bolts are removed, then the entire assembly can be pulled out. Just the brake pedal needs to be depressed and it can be threaded out towards the front.

Once removed I found the issue immediately. Of the 3 bolts holding the footrest to its mounting bracket, which is sandwiched between two rubber dampers, only one was correct, and it wasn't even tight. One was broken off with the threaded part missing, so it was just resting in its bore and was without a washer. And the last one was an incorrect bolt that was loose and stripped.
(the correct Yamaha bolt is the shouldered one on the left)

A little degreasing was required.

I installed 2 new bolts (90109-08193-00) and new M10 washers.

Reassembled and ready to go back in.

The pegs are now solid and light years better than before. It also fixed my side stand which had previously allowed the bike to lean over a little too much. Now that the bracket is held in place correctly it performs as it should. Two issues solved with one fix.

I also re-synced the carbs and added another 1/4 turn out on the air screws.
Ready to rip again!

Very nice.  Also love that Yamaha still offers a lot of replacement hardware for 50+ year old models.
