Title: Forged vs. Cast pistons for my RD400?
Post by: RDnuTZ on May 14, 2025, 03:05:57 PM
Seen lots of discussions over the years of using cast vs. forged pistons for oversize top end jobs. My RD400 cylinders came with Wiseco P6 in them and initial bore measurements and wall condition looks like I need to go 2.00 mm oversize. I see Wossner (forged) and Pro-X (cast) commonly used on builds here and wondering if there is consensus on best value with reliability, price etc.?

In my MX world we kind of shied away from Wiseco forged stuff from dubious track record on expansion seizures but many times that was all we could get on biggest oversizes. I'm seeing Wossner, Pro-X and Wiseco all listed on eBay with 66mm available. Wossner and Pro-X both around $90.00 per kit but Wiseco considerably higher?

I'm leaning towards Pro-X here but would like to hear what others would do in this situation. Any pros or cons with any of them? This is a spare set of cylinders that will replace top ends currently on the project bike if that factors into consideration.

TIA!

my tzr lives at 10k. cast. I'm not running nitrous so zero point in forged for a street bike IMHO. I ran wvertex in my lc, but mostly because the are lighter. I'd never run wisecos anymore
