How many of you have gone back to stock pipes after running chambers?
On my '75 RD350 I really only ran Wicked pipes, then threw the stockers on for the heck of it and was shocked. I find them a lot more practical for around town riding, and even backroad cruising. #1 for the sound and #2 for the tractable power. Maybe it's just the Wicked pipes, but they have very little under 6k RPM, whereas the stockers pull like a tractor from about 4k.
Granted I like the chambers for attacking twisties or a hard ride, but I kindof like the stockers for 75% of the riding I do. I'm guessing the chambers add a good 5hp.
Here is my "butt dyno" comparison.
Well, I haven't gone back because finding a good set of stock pipes that don't have rash on them or bad chrome is hard. But, as much as I love chambers I didn't hate the stock pipes. They just die out at 8k.
I have returned to stock pipes on my rd400 and agree on all points
I went back to stock pipes from running DG pipes. Although as I spend time on this site I have learned the DG's aren't that great.
I reverted back to stock for a variety of reasons but I dunno if my bike will stay that way. I liked the added ground clearance, I do like the extra pep/torque down in the low rpms. I really like the look of the bike with the stock pipes better than the DG's but a lot of that had to do with never getting a proper set of rear sets. I also like the functionality of the stock center stand but with that is extra weight.
I dunno it's just where I am at with my bike for now but it would be fun to run the DG's or something better and do a better job tuning them but that's my situation. What I really need to do is get another RD and modify the heck out of it so I can have both.
Where I am at now with the bike is a bit of a plateau that's money related as well as tuning knowledge. I have the money to do more but I am being kinda cheap as a matter of principle.Basically I am currently unemployed and looking for work but I did take my RD to a level the past year that although it can be improved upon, it looks great, starts easy and runs good and is reliable. There's some more tweaks I would like to do but I'm just procrastinating on them. Like replacement baffles for the stock pipes that improve exhaust flow and getting rid of the stock air box along with rejetting for those changes. After reading Mark's thread regarding all the typical bolt on mods, I am curious about tuning the bike with a Zeel since I already have the Vape ignition. Also I am curious about the V force reed mod and getting a cross over tube as well as some machined heads or just some kinda tuning adj. for today's typical pump gas. Saying all this as if it would make a difference while keeping the stock pipes. Maybe not power wise but perhaps make the bike rev quicker?
This is why I have a modded and stock rd350. Best of both world.
the only way around it is to go with a programmable ignition if you're running stock porting IMHO. that's how my R5 works. it pulls from 2k like a stock bike.
When I did the stinger mod to the DG's I went for a real mid range design. It doesn't feel as fast as a top end pipe (duh) but around the city it probably is faster. It's a lot easier to ride and you don't have to zing totally out to keep it on the pipe. It doesn't pull to the moon like a good pipe would though. I went with TM28's too, which work great right off idle all the way up but they probably don't help the top end as much as a larger carb.
I'm getting older and the chambers get loud after a few feet :help:
are any of you guys running stock pipes using the improved flow baffles Yam Bits sells? That seems like a slightly better performance option than OEM stock, but probably less performance than any of the common chambers including DG.
ive run them. they help. nicely made too and cheap
