Title: Banshee Stator & Magnet on the AC RD350?
Post by: 350GUY on November 09, 2025, 07:58:56 PM
Just curious - Has anyone tried adapting the complete stator (along with the plate/coils), trigger/pick-up coil and magnet onto the RD350? Understand that the Banshee Crank where the woodruff key side might be a bit longer compared to the RD350.....

points model it wont fit the crank at all. you need to run a crank that can take the rotor drum, and thats a large taper end. banshee, lc, or rz.

however, the other components will bolt in to the cases. plate etc.

would be more effective to fit an HPI or a vape.  below is a pic of a banshee ignition, in aircooled cases, using a 4l0 crankshaft. I do not recommend going this route  as the crankshaft needs to be modified on the other end OR the oil injection removed and the covers modified greatly.

Thank you so much Mark, as always super knowledgeable and helpful. Now that I see yours above, definitely I will look at HPI or Vape. Thanks again.

Aircooled 400s in other markets were fitted with the same design of ignition as a Banshee/RZ LC.  IIRC that started with the E model. A few decades back we had E, F and G models in  a few different 250 and 400 formats but for the life of me I cannot remember how the crank was different.

The end had to be larger diameter I would expect - as Mark mentioned and it did have a threaded end to take a nut, in place of the older model bolt.  I wonder if Canadian models retained points or if they were the same as US models.

Mark probably knows the answer to that.

as far as I know, the last 400 in Canada did indeed have a cdi. but im not 100%. I am curious if a UK 250e crank would go in though..

The final RD400, the 3J7, the F and G models in Canada (and there was an Australian model 3M4?)had the same taper as the later RD-LC or RZ.
That final crank looked more like a TZ crank than a RD crank... it had holes in the cheeks and no heavy metal for balance... and the key was 90 degrees off... and I think the pins were serrated (I don't remember)

Before the F and G models, the Canadian RDs and the US RDs were the same

The UK RD250 E/F has the same ignition taper as the LC / YPVS motor and is a direct swap. As bitzz says above the only drawback is the keyway which is 90 degrees out. Almost identical to the TZ cranks and has the bonus of having no lead balance weights. I have several but sadly in the UK  :umm:

well. the keyway really isn't needed.
