Title: Questions and observations on upcoming project
Post by: 2TFool on April 29, 2026, 06:13:08 AM
Good morning,
Dying to get started on this project, but for now I just get to stare at it and think about it.
As you can see in the picture it has larger Mikuni carburetors and Uni pod filters. There's not really enough room for the filters, packed in against the frame tubes and each other, their surface area to the atmosphere reduced. I'm assuming that it worked and would do so again, but it doesn't look very elegant. Are there any alternatives?

You can see the engine mounting plates on the top of the engine are missing. Is there any reason why they wouldn't be there?

The bike has a PVL ignition system, I don't see it discussed much in this forum. Again, I assume it works well enough, but I don't think there's much love for it around here?

The Ramair (sp) filter(s) might make you happier.
I remember the upper engine mount was often omitted on TZs way back when, so perhaps someone thought it would be beneficial to their street bike as well.
Probably not a thing wrong with a PVL; they've been around for decades. There are newer systems with more features available, but if it works...

pvl is race ignition. its great. on a track. but theres no charging system. given the choice between that and as stock alternator w points.. id go stock on a street bike. and I loathe points.  as far as the air filter,  you can get angled unis, they help. I actually have a 3d printed y boot for this exact reason, large carbs no room. but the unis are fine. lastly, I like running the rear mounts, have even made oversized aluminum ones in the past due to breaking stock ones.

TZ motors have rubber mounts, like an RD400, on the front mounts so as the motor vibrates and moves around, it tears the rear upper mount out of the castings along with the tacho drive.  That's why TZ riders usually leave the upper rear mount at home.

If ALL the crankcase mounts are rubber isolated, then keep the upper rear but if that rear mount is solid and lower mounts are rubber, it could become an issue

PVL race ignitions are great.  Simple and fairly reliable. None of the features of a modern 12v DC CDI, but if you don't have them you don't miss them. They are a race ignition though with no battery charging capacity.

Thanks for the replies,
I'll check the nature of the existing mounts, whether they're rubber, what condition they're in.
M ln NC, I know you don't approve of a total loss electrical system and I totally understand why. I'm not sure I want to put a 50 year-old alternator back in the bike and purchase something like a Dyna S for $375 (or put the points and condenser back in) and as much as I would like a vape system, it looks like they're $800. I need to get the bike cleaned up, put back together and ride it even with its limitations, first.
That's an interesting looking engine in front of your air cleaner manifold. Did you 3-D print that? Can one print with rubber or something like it?

the alternators are pretty dead reliable.  fit a modern regulator rectifier and you're pretty much golden. like said, ive run total loss lighting, it sucks.

yes its a printed y boot. I drew that one up but at the time didn't have a printer that would do that, but I do now. :gentleman:
thats tpu85. fuel proof and flexible.  yes, I have it in black as well. the blue was a test roll

to follow up w one other option.  id consider an hpi cdi. I run one of these as well. treatland has sales and they get reasonable.  but id def run it in with the pvl, but def not a perm answer imho

:agree:
Tomorrow is your last day to take advantage of the Treatland 20% off sale. They don't have the standard HPI in stock, but they have the dual-curve model.

Wow! That's a whole world of mopeds! I couldn't find my way to an RD 350 ignition system.
I turned 16 in 1977 in England. You could ride a moped on a permit at that age. They were mopeds everywhere, the cool kids had Yamaha FS1E's. I probably wasn't cool and certainly had no money, I rode the bus.

That blue will look pretty good mounted on a bike.
