I was having issue with the clutch sticking so decided to drain the oil and have a look. I noticed some metal flake, and finer metal bits, so I pulled the case cover.
The steels and fibers look to be in decent shape, with the exception of a few friction plates that have seen more heat than others.
The manual calls for 7 steels with 6 frictions, along with 6 cushion rings. What I found was 7 frictions and 6 steels. I also noted some superficial notching of the basket, but feels fairly smooth.
There is also some slight in and out play in the outer basket, as well as rotational play between the outer basket and the large gear behind the basket. Maybe this is all normal? Noted some small chipping in a few spots. Maybe this is my metal flake I found. TBD once I get a clutch puller.
How necessary are the rubber rings that I am very clearly missing. Definitely looks like whoever installed these made a mistake, but would like the brain trust to confirm.
Thanks to Mark for pointing me in the right direction on FB.
it changed . the later ones, like yours, do indeed have 7 frictions. the pressure plate shape is the giveaway. so, that is correct.
looks like it might be a barnett clutch. everyone ive had has stuck when it sat. but when they grab they grab.
Thanks, Mark. Good to know. Description is completely accurate. At least it's one less concern. I was able to pull the baskets. The shaft splines look great, the bushing looks like it's seen some heat, but nothing crazy. Big rubber o-ring behind the basket gear is missing, but I see no meaningful use for it.
The shaft bearing behind the washer feels and sounds solid as can be. Not sure it's worth pulling more shit apart.
Do these thrust washers wear out and need occasional replacement?
The only possible explanation I can come up with is the metal is from a steel plate because of my shitty clutch adjustment (little to no play), or it's the small missing pieces from the clutch basket described above.
that big o ring keeps the basket from rattling against the basket. not nec needed but not bad eithet. that metal may be a peice of a bendover tab . not sure. i wouldn't worry about it tbh. take drain plug out, hose the lower end w brake clean, thru the holes to flush out the trans . reassemble. ive never seen a worn thrust washer in an ed trans, or worn enough to matter.
Awesome, I appreciate the advice. This bike is too intoxicating to leave idle.
By the way, Greg's bike ran phenomenal with points. He called me shortly after he ran it, and he sounded like he was just asked to the junior high prom. Shoulda listened to you in the first place :bang: Thanks, Mark!!
oh shit. lol thats awesome. glad he got it sorted. hope he throws that old ignition in the trash
