The chambers on my RD350B were painted a couple years ago and the Rustolem high temp semi-gloss black is peeling off. I think due to poor prep on my part. I did not strip them to bare metal, only scuffed up the old paint and shot over it. 1st step was a generous application of several coats of paint stripper and scraping with a putty knife.

Next about an hour with a drill and wire wheel. One stripped to bare metal, one to go.

A wire brush will work, but moderate media blasting gives you a bit more "tooth" for the paint to grip to, and better overall adhesion.

Clean with Denatured Alchohol and wipe until you don't get anything on the rag. Use gloves, and brush-over the surface to removal any lint before spraying.

If you like a semi-gloss high heat finish, Rust-Oleum High Heat Ultra is very good.  Generally a finish with some amount of gloss is more durable and stronger than a dead-flat finish. I've used PJ1 and VHT High heat - and wasn't impressed with either.

Spray enough to get it covered and smooth in the first coat, then after a few minutes, do a second.  Most paints are the most chip resistant with just enough to get it covered, and a little more, but not thick.  Thick paint will chip easier.

Work in the shade and don't spray if the part is hot.  After spraying, you can put it in the sun to speed up the curing.

Some high heat paints need to be run-in on the engine to fully cure.

The easy way to tell if your paint is fully cured is to smell it.  Fully cured paint has no smell.

Thanks. I am using high heat caliper paint after seeing how good my friend Josh's RZ pipes turned out at the Deaks Gap meet.

What is the heat rating for the caliper paint?  What brand?

I'm surprised it can handle the heat of the pipes.

it can. duplicolor caliper paint.
it states 500f. but..  it holds up. look on the fz bits on an rd thread. my chambers were painted.. years ago, with caliper paint. they still look like that
.

honestly, vht if cured correctly  exactly like the can states to the letter works awesome. but i don't have an oven that big not in the house.

Turned out good not perfect. Had a small sag inside of left pipe very minor. Should be hidden when installed.

I have used this stuff before with a spray gun. Thin it a bit and do 2 or 3 heavy coats last really well.

The LH is a touch shinier than the RH. Close enough.

I put some Right Stuff sealant on the spigots so I  won't be starting it up until tomorrow.
