Title: Oil
Post by: Fullmetal1203 on July 12, 2019, 01:22:16 PM
What oil are you guys running? New rd owner and wondering what I should run?  Do I need to make any adjustments on the pump for certain oils?

I use Lucas semi-synth ($$$ but available at most chain auto parts store). After using it for 2500 miles or so I so very little carbon build up.

Chuck (2t guru) recommends Quiksilver Synthetic blend.

Any 2T oil not labeled "premix only" will work just fine in the pump.

Full synthetic burns cleaner but is more expensive.

I recommend Motul 710, but usually use Bombardier XPS snowmobile/watercraft oil because its cheaper and there is a Polaris/Skidoo dealership down the street from my house.

I use Maxima 927 Castor at 32:1
It smells amazing but I did notice a slight blackening of the piston crowns at about 500 miles or so. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190713/ee7865867f7943b5098cb54b6aca57e7.jpg)

Since you are using the injector pump as I am you can not run Castor oils like Castor 927. It will tell you on bottle if ok for injector , premix or both. I run Motol 710 full synthetic ester oil pricey but lasts many tankfuls , i figure why cut corners on lubricating my $1000.00 plus rebuild. I also do add one capful of Castol 927 in tank for that wonderful smell and 20 mls of Stabil Performace 360 to gas tank to help with the lousy 10% ethanol added to gas  .

Garbage oil...unless your going to take it apart every 1,000 mikes to unstick the rings... :bang:
So much was lost with the old forum as I documented using blendzall what it did to a RD aircooled engine!
I have pics somewhere.

It was so bad I just bought new piston kits as they were stuck to the point I couldn't get the rings off to the clean the pistons.

I am no longer able to locate ethanol free Premium in my area.

I have been using this: https://lucasoil.com/products/fuel-treatments/safeguard-ethanol-fuel-conditioner-with-stabilizers

I have no feedback on its effectiveness or benefits though.

I've had good results with Startron fuel additive. Honestly fresh fuel and use it up is the best practice. Drain it if it's gonna sit for more than a couple weeks. Way easier than buying parts every time ya wanna ride.

I've been using the Quicksilver synthetic blend in my 400 at Supertunes recommendation (he built the engine) and I have had no problems whatsoever. Smokes nice at cold startup but that's it.

I use this in my RD350. No issues so far. Will be using for my next build too. Like the Blue color oil.

My buddy has been using that stuff for years. I might switch to quicksilver for my next gallon bottle, its available at walmart and is only 23 dollars. Been using yamalube 2S because I can get a gallon for 15 dollars at the local motorcycle shop with my friend's discount.
