Title: 1974 RD250 with High Top Carbs - Question
Post by: BlueR32 on October 24, 2026, 11:55:37 AM
After installing the Vape things are improved but still not running 100%. Decided to remove the carbs and go through them again. I have the high tops. Should there be a gasket (#25 in the pic - PN 246-14126-00-00) between the top of the carb and the screw-on high top? The parts fiche does not show a gasket for the high top but I would think it should. Please chime in!

theres an o ring in the high top carb in the top. it does not affect how it runs.

low tops and high tops perform the same  :twocents:

M, by O-Ring do you mean the gasket 246-14126-00-00? I took the tops off and there is no O-Ring or gasket to be seen. When you say it does not affect how it runs, do you mean that it's not necessary at all?

there should be an o-ring in the high top carb hat if i remember correctly. look in there, there should be a seat for it above the threads
does not appear to be in the fiche though.

its better to have it as it keeps the tops from coming loose.  (backing out)

You are quite right. I missed this on first inspection but there it is!

I've just made some discoveries. Looks like these carbs are VM28 and not stock VM26. Must have been swapped out by a previous owner as they came with the motor when I acquired it. I measured the internal bore diameter at the outlet and it is 28.7mm. There are two numbers stamped into the carb bodies under the choke area 361 and 60. Slides themselves are 30mm diameter. Are these indeed VM28s?

However the needles are 5L4's. One of them is badly pitted and needs to be replaced.

So now I need some jetting advice.
I am running DG chambers and Uni Filter on a Y-Boot.

1. Should I replace needles with 5L1 for VM28 carbs?
2. Main jets are currently 130, pilots are 30 - what should I be running with this setup?
