Title: Are the RD400 fork tunes interchangeable with RD350?
Post by: patastinky on September 17, 2019, 02:19:20 AM
Considering sending my forks out to franks forks, but was curious if these would fit my 75' RD350 as they are cheaper than getting a new set from Frank.

Unfortunately not. All RD250, RD350, and all RD400 EXCEPT Daytona have 34 mm fork tubes.

You can use 34mm RD400 tubes with 350 lowers but you would need the 400 internals as well.

Are you 100% sure about this? 30 years ago, I purchased some 34 mm fork tubes for -76 or older XS650. The  350 damper rod bushing and snap ring was a straight fit for those forks, even when the 650 has larger steel damper rods, compared to the slender, alloy 350 damper rods.

I guess I never gave it much thought, being that they are different I didn't even try 350 damping rods in the 400 tubes..............in my opinion, the 400 forks work better than 350 forks anyway, so I would use 400 damping rods with 400 tubes for that reason.

Are the 35mm Daytona forks any better than the 34mm?

What about R1 or R6 front conversion? I've seen posts from other forums where people have do this. It might be a bit more than getting new fork tubes from frank, but it would be a seeet upgrade over stock; no?

R6 conversions is doable.
THe Good: much better tuning fork, larger stiffer, duel disk better brakes
THe Bad; Very decreased turning radius, front wheel miss match [17"], handles like a tank. Cost $$$$

A set of RD forks with good springs and some emulators will handle great without a lot of hassle and no trade offs. A USD fork set up might have some bling factor if that's what you're going for.

One disc is plenty stopping power on the front of an RD. Another disc is more bling at the cost of unsprung and rotating weight. Again, it's all what you're going for.

If I was doing a USD fork conversion on an RD, I would look for a fork from a later supersports 125, like Aprilia for example. Those 125s are closer to a modded RD both weight and power wise than any R6 or R1. That way they are most likely lighter, and have better spring and damping rates.

No,
Stay with 34's or go up to 38's like we run on the race RD off a early FZR600.
