Title: On the apocalypse
Post by: IR8D8R on March 20, 2020, 11:42:33 PM
Guys,
I have heard from colleagues abroad. This virus is bad. Worse than any flu since 1918. Don't ignore the warnings. Stay home or ride alone. The only thing that is going to solve this crisis is limiting human transmission.

In Italy the army is removing the bodies from hospitals because the morgues are overwhelmed. Thousands will be cremated en masse. I heard this from my friend in Pescara.

In Lebanon people are dropping dead in the street and the bodies are not collected because people are afraid to touch them. I heard this from my colleague in Amman, Jordan.

I'm non-political but our president is a fuc*ing moron and downplaying the potential consequences. The American public will not take this seriously until people they love die. I don't want that to happen to anyone.

I work in healthcare and I have contacts all over the world. The danger is greater than Fox news is telling you. Please stay home and ride this out. The time is NOW to remove yourself from everyone except family. Please. This is not a time for bravado. It is not overblown. The government is failing to act. The only hope is to isolate.

A senior physician I know told me that millions will die in the U.S. if something significant isn't done. Trump doesn't know a virus from his wife's asshole. I have a freezer full of meat, ammo, and 3 gallons of whiskey. I'm home for the next month. I HOPE YOU ALL WILL DO THE SAME. Let's stop this before it kills people we care for. STAY HOME. Going broke is better than being dead.

I spent a month on a ventilator in 1995 from serious pneumonia. Almost killed me. I was wasted, crazy, and gone for 2 years after. I lost 80 lbs in 3 weeks. My hospital bill was $249,000. This will do that to you. STAY HOME!!!!

Thanks Chuck.

Your support means a lot. I promise I am not a reactionary. Washington state is running near a 10% fatality rate. This is real. I live in a hick town in East Tennessee but I have friends who are in affected places who are really scared. Now they are saying that men are twice as likely to have acute cases. I wish Dakotagirl was here to fry us for that. RIP Heather. If you are over 50 you should worry.

I bet the Dragon is deserted. Maybe I will venture up there to see. I believe that riding alone is very safe. Just stay away from other people and keep it on the pipe.

Thanks for the insight, Andrew. It's so hard to know what to believe watching the news at night, then driving in to work the next morning and seeing...nothing out of the ordinary. I live in a hick town in Washington, and besides the wife and kids being home from school things seem pretty normal. I work at a tractor dealership in a 3000 square-foot shop with 5 other techs, so there's plenty of distance between us, but...? 52 years old, male non-smoker with good lungs who's never seen anything like this.

Like Wade says.  I am truly worried for my parents, friends etc.  Today I went to Home Depot to meet a handyman and buy materials - many people are acting like there is nothing to worry about.

Look what's happening in Italy - 4,000 deaths with a population of 60 million.

Our (USA) population is around 330 million and we are unprepared for what is coming.  Let's protect ourselves, be safe.  Another thing to consider, be extra careful on your motorcycles, we don't want to go to the ER ever, and more so if the hospital is overflowing with sick people.

I too am concerned about the current flu situation.  Personally as well as nationally and internationally.  Personally because both my wife and I am in our eighties.  I am in very good health; my Doc says I'm in better health than most of her 40 year old patients, but Pat has  some underlying conditions and we have decided to isolate ourselves as much as possible to protect against infection.  Our political and broadcast news situation is difficult to take at face value, but I think it possible to have significant Covid-19 fatalities in a short period of time which might overload our medical system.  There were some 12,000 estimated deaths from swine flu between April 2009 and 2010 but the CDC cautions that the Covid-19 death rate will be higher and quicker without an anti-virus.

We Americans generally just don't take care of ourselves, relying on corrective medicine rather than prevention.  You might have heard of the Georgia State Senator that had symptoms of the flu but still attended sessions of the legislature so he could vote on measures being presented.  What an idiot!  He represents me and he hasn't the sense to stay home when he is sick!  Dumb ass.  We all need to be smart, take care of ourselves, hope and pray for the best, and we will get through this.

i agree with all comments
part of the problem;
i was raised to do the right thing- and that is to provide for my family- even if it kills me
so it is very ,very hard to sit around and not provide-i think i am speaking for many when i say that

i also dont think staying inside my house will do anything against a thing that can travel the world- stay alive on some surfaces for who knows how long (the list is longer than my computers memery)
i dont believe there is any such thing as an antivirus- like the flu shot??!? is that an antivirus? , if so dont get your hopes up
if it is really as bad is what they say, it wont make a difference what WE do, many will die and some will live and the world will have to go on
all this hiding from doing anything is going to leave us with NOTHING when we are truly weak
hey get those damn farmers away from that food for 2 weeks!- bye bye food
in all fairness, i am an electrician and not a doctor so take it with a grain of salt
i did have to give up trusting the "health care industry" a few years back for many reasons but mostly because an industry has no concern for my GOOD health

Many good points being made here, and I am relieved to hear that most of us are taking this VERY seriously.

One very valid point to make, that I don't believe has been mentioned yet, is that social distancing and isolation are SO important because a huge percentage of the infected are showing, and will show NO SYMPTOMS at all.  Do not, for a second, believe that because those around you (or you yourself) are not coughing or running a fever that you haven't been exposed.  The numbers here in the States are artificially low (by design) because we have almost no testing compared to other nations.

As of this morning, there are 18,000+ confirmed cases in the US.  It is in every state, including DC, HI and AK.    In reality, that number is likely MUCH higher, as most aren't showing symptoms (yet or never will) and those who are are being told to stay home unless they are at death's door.

I will qualify all of this by saying, I typically have the most cavalier, "safety third" attitude possible, but this shit has me seriously spooked.

Do whatever you can to stay healthy and stay out of the hospital, because, if you have been paying attention at all to the timelines and exponential growth and spread of Covid-19 in places like Italy, Iran, etc, then you know WE AIN'T SEEN NUTHIN' YET.  Your local hospital WILL be overwhelmed.

Unfortunately, it looks like we are gonna be in this for the long haul.  Like many months (or longer).  Get out in the shop, garage, basement, shed or wherever you work on your bikes.  Post up lots of pics, listen to/make lots of music, get out in your garden, hold your family close and we'll get thru this together.

(... and I have tried to keep politics out of this as I know that is Mark's wish, but I do believe the current Administration has blood on their hands for seriously fucking this up.  Putting personal profit, corporate bailouts, and re-election hopes over American lives is reprehensible and IMHO as good a definition of treason as any)

This too shall pass. Worry is waste and a huge mental drain on your personal well being.

That said as well, politics aside, the President has done plenty to inform the public about this. Folks ot ain't hard. Its not up to him to stop this spreading short of what he's already done, nor is it state and local governments job, its ours as everyday people. Any time the government steps in for anything its a shit show. Perhaps one day you might learn that.

Though in general people are retarded and tend to Panic! At the Costco... so there's that as well.

I have a friend who is a farmer up in Wisconsin. Dairy and corn. He isn't stopping tending his farm. They just aren't going to town.

He can plant and milk his cows without worry. Hopefully this will be over by the fall. They are prepared to limit contact for a month by staying home.

He says the truckers who deliver and take away can stay in their cabs and he doesn't need to have personal contact outside his family.

dudes,

its not about "it will go around the world anyway so why......"
I am in Ireland, and watch the news from Italy every day. England and Ireland are next in line for the biggy.
today in Italy, who have been on lock-down for two weeks already.
5000 new cases in one day
790 deaths in one day
the army are overloaded with corpses on their way to the crem.
take it seriously.
Italy has the best medical care in Europe, Ireland the worst.
it is doubling here every three days.
that means that if you hospital system is at 50 percent one day, in three days it will be overloaded.

it is not about accepting it and riding it out, it is about spread the curve spike out so the medical system can cope over a longer period of time.

please stay safe and isolate.

best form of transport is the motorcycle, transport AND isolation!.

cheers folks

I've decided to take 5 days off and reassess then. Certain things in my life cannot withstand dragging the virus into other's lives .The banks and such will have to wait for their money and deal with it. I am recovering financially from a rough couple years so WTF is a couple more? Just ain't worth it to me for a few bucks. I will venture out tomorrow and grab some cigars if the shop is open. Must have something to occupy my time with.

I so hope I'm wrong but there's one hell of a lot of folks who could come to seriously regret not following the social distancing guidelines. A friend down in Florida said Spring Break isn't looking any different this year to any other which is a very real example of the current "I don't GaF" attitude. This sort of attitude may well not kill any of these "young invincible" but is darn well going to kill lots of their/other folks parents & Grandparents. Like in other countries it'll probably take the Government's intervention to get a grip of the selfishness of those currently carrying on as normal but f*ck is it ever time to WISE UP people !!!

There has been at least 230 cases diagnosed within 30 miles of my house. I'm loaded down with food and supplies. Just going to hang out here and not go to any stores. I'll find things to do on my property. Still can go for a ride in the car, or on the bike. Plan on doing some rural bicycling when it warms some. It's so weird that the earth can turn upside down so quickly.

me and the girl are hanging low as we can. however, she manages an Outback steakhouse, they have moved to take out and delivery, and she just works indoors no dealing with the public. She has lupus, so her immune system is jacked as it is just on regular days, but shes good about keeping clear of people when she needs to, and is very cautious, but her business is doing well.

as far as what i do for work, also no general public interaction at all. so far, we have been doing well (industrial valving and automation). Seems like there are quite a few places that have moved maintenance and shut down to this time frame, and work is continuing. Luckily, we are able to stay afloat, if it comes to that, for 3 mos with zero income at my place of business. So far, we're lucky.

My dad, whos 80 and in superb health, keeps to himself anyway, and is just doing yard work and is stocked up on supplies for mos, as he always is. He lives in the country about 20 mins away with no close neighbors. so, he's good so far. But, i have some concerns for both.

Yesterday, angie was off so we hit the grocery store early, grabbed a few things, then went for a ride on the CB. roads are empty and weather was great, was a beautiful day.  wen back to her house to have a few drinks and then got some steaks from her work later.

Im sure things will eventually get back to normal, just proceed with caution. example: what i've been doing when getting fuel is using a paper towel to handle the gas pump and a pen to hit the keys . just assume everything has poo on it, and you'll be safer.

shes drinking some orange vodka concoction (its actually really good) and i had whiskey in the glass on the tailbag of the cb. this is at her house, my falcon resides there for the past 2 yrs. Keeps her buick company  :patriot:

this will eventually be my shop, assuming we all survive, we are planning to get married in Nov 2021.  :cheerleader:

Lot's of good advice here.

The one thing I'd say is to listen to a reputable sources on reporting. There's is a never ending stream of mis-information out there.

Here is a great core source for recorded infections and mortality rate: https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

The U.S. is currently at around 1.27% mortality rate and that has been falling daily. Of course cases are exploding right now, so only time will tell where the rate lands. Washington's mortality rate is around 5% right now, and is indeed one of the highest on the world scale. New York however, while having the most number of cases of any state, is only around .6% mortality rate. Keep in mind the U.S. purposefully only tested those with significant symptoms of Covid 19, but has now expanded that in recent days. This method of testing actually skews results towards higher mortality figures. Also consider that there is a huge population of people that will never get tested simply because they have no symptoms or no means to receive testing, so again the results are to be understood as "recorded" results and not definitive. In Pittsburgh here, they have opened drive through type testing centers. If you show symptoms, try to find a drive through testing center. This avoids clogging up hospitals and maintains social distancing.

Stay safe out there, take care of yourself, and try not to hoard goods at it disproportionately effects those on fixed incomes and those with lower overall incomes.

I'm still going to work. I work at a huge healthcare software company. We employ around 10,000 people and have typically seen around 1,000 people in our 7 million sq ft facility. I see about ten people a day usually. I'm not the one to get too riled up about this stuff but am starting to wonder how important going to work is these days...

The only people with blood on their hands is China. They knew about it and did nothing to inform the rest of the world about it. They let the people leave the country and spread it all around the world , that is how we got our first case here in Wisconsin , students coming back to school after Chinese new year. No doubt that's how Italy was infected. If someone could please tell me what the Democrats plan is other than to obstruct and criticize I would appreciate it. They have done nothing in over 3 years to help the American people other than to offer free everything to illegal immigrants and people who don't want to work. It is time for them to stop supporting foreign countries like Iran and China and start working for Americans in this country. More people were infected and died from swine flu under Obama and not one word from the media or the democrats. This a new virus and our current testing equipment is inadequate against it , you cant blame anyone for this. You cant make millions of masks and ventilators in a couple weeks people. Watch the press conferences and decide for yourself if what is being done is good or bad. The president closed off travel and the democrats call him racist , he asks for funding and its not enough , he wants money to help citizens and the democrats want it for all kinds of things not related to the virus. Stop getting your news from Hollywood and cnn.

^ this shit gets you banned. this one is for 45 14 days. Its not like i didn't EXPLICITLY state NO POLITICS and to keep it civil .  :whatever:

before anybody accuses me of being some left wing nut job, I read my news from AP and other sources, some left, some right, most middle ground.  I wont take this from either side. and, especially opinion based non facts as demonstrated above.

FWIW,  a very right orientated moderator made me aware of this post. Keep this opinion-based-blame game shit on FB, not here.  AND THAT GOES FOR EVERYBODY.

to be fair, i will strike out the text you should avoid to make anybody get into a  pissing match on here. You should all know better. Id recommend editing your posts.

Luckily I retired the end of February and missed being exposed to the corona virus in my office, all of my former employees are teleworking and self quarantining for the next few weeks.  This wasn't exactly how I planned to spend my time retired but I am happy I am not riding a commuter bus and working in a building with 6000 people.  My wife and I fit into the higher risk group so we are laying low and trying to minimize our contact with others.  Plenyy of food and TP so we are set for the next month or so. Stay safe everyone..

Once you get a bidet attachment you will never go back lol.

Here in MI seems like a lot of folks aren't taking it too seriously which is dangerous.  Driving by the hospital about a week ago there was a large line for testing, but i don't know if they even have tests any more.  If everyone could just stay at home for a few weeks we could burn it out, but that's just not happening.  There is some evidence that after getting it you have a some sort of immunity to it, for a short time at least.  I just hope there are a lot of smart people being given resources to develop a vaccine.  Seems like we have a rough road ahead of us for the next few months if that curve of cases keeps exponentially growing.

howdy boys...
for some reason, I find myself online a bit (LOT) more than usual the last couple of weeks?   Can't remember the last time that I stopped by here, but it's nice to know that my password still works, and good to see some familiar names.

Yep, I still have my Gold H2..but that is my ONLY running/titled/streetable motorcycle I currently own. Still crap weather here in good ol' Minnesota, so haven't been on a bike for 5 months. That said, spring is just around the corner, and I am stoked to fire up that bike and take it for a rip.

The last couple of years, my spare time has mostly been spent working on our property (built a new garage last summer)
..................and playing with old trucks/cars. In all honesty, I just got a bit burned out on motorcycle projects (Haase, I don't know how you do it dude!!!???)

Currently giving a '64 VW Baja bug a going over, with a '71 VW Westfalia waiting in the wings.

Everything is just so "weird" right now, with having to put thought into so many things we never had a reason to think about before.
Like Mark said, just treat foreign objects (including people, right?) as if it had shit on it and you should be good....lol
I get boxes just about everyday when working on bike/car projects. Now the box shows up, and I just let it sit on the porch for 2-3 days to "decontaminate" itself....    No joke, right now, there are 2-3 boxes sitting right outside the window....lol

God bless the freaking postman, UPS, Fed Ex, Grocery workers, and of course Medical and EMS workers, etc......  All of those people that continue to keep the wheels turning.

The tractor store where I work is starting a "soft close" today, meaning we're open for business but the doors are closed. Salesmen, parts guys and service writer are to go outside and communicate with customers as the arrive, but not let them inside the building. Phone, email orders are encouraged.
In the shop, we were all given the option to stay home and try for unemployment. If we stay, the distancing and disinfecting regimens are being ramped up and we can work as long as there's work. We've been given a form to carry with us when we travel to show we're "essential" (agriculture), so we don't get a ticket on the way in to work.
A local grocery store employee reportedly was maced by a customer for getting too close while helping said customer with their groceries. This is surreal.

We have a person with a positive test where I work. We are shut down until 01 April at a minimum. No pay of course.

Hawaii has a mandatory "stay at home" order as well.  Anyone flying into the Aloha State from today forward is subject to 14 day quarantine.  That means when you land at the airport, go to your home or to your hotel room and stay there for two weeks.

We are just chilling out here in Portland under a "stay-at-home" order.  This means you can't leave the house unless for work, food shopping, or "exercise".  Violation is a Class-C misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and $1,250 fine.

I've been working in the yard, working in the garage, etc.  I cleaned out my car, and snuck over to a buddies house and got a set of his race takeoff Q3's to throw on my TDR.  Yes we kept our distance from each other.  I do enough stupid shit and have survived way to many crazy adventures to die drowning in my own lung butter.

Takeout food seems pretty sketchy these days, so I'm cooking all our meals here for my wife, daughter and me.  Made a pork shoulder today.  24hrs in the sous vide, then 3hrs in the smoker.  Best pulled pork I have ever made.

I'm a beekeeper too, so I've also been making (and taking) propolis tincture and delivering it to a few friends who aren't in the best health.  It's good shit, you can read about it here:  https://www.rxlist.com/propolis/supplements.htm

I do residential home inspections for work.  I'll still go do inspections on vacant homes, but if the house is occupied, no fucking thank you.  I have to touch every door handle, lightswitch, bathroom sink faucet and toilet handle.  Gloves or not, that just doesn't sound like a good idea these days.

On a lighter note! Through sheer boredom (locked down) I decided to do a sound check on different motors running. With due diligence I have determined that a 2 stroke twin(DS-7), and a four stroke single(SRX-600) have the most harmonious sound idling together! The VFR and the RZ were a close second though!.......................................stay home, stay healthy, D

Everything creepy here in N California.  I have a friend in Georgetown, a small mountain town,  and a group of Harley riders came in and went to the general store there (about the only thing open) and acted like nothing happening.  A group of locals came in after them and told them to take there "god#### motorcycles and their asses out of there".  I guess they didn't want them spreading the virus to their little town.  A scene from an apocalypse movie.

Went to my small twin grocery store and every body had a mask except me... Not knocking them, but it was a bit surreal.

Yeah, I've been staying out of the big stores (Costco, Fred Meyer/Kroger, Trader Joe's) and hitting the food service store (Cash & Carry) and the local butcher/grocery/produce market instead.  Way less crowded and most things are cheaper.

Took my 11yo daughter with me today.  We both had proper n95 masks and she wore gloves too.  Most of the employees were wearing the same.

Amazing how she just rolls with it.   I put a basket in her hand and told her to get whatever she wanted.  She might have been trippin' on the inside, but outwardly she seemed totally unfazed by it all.

My friend Max and his wife in Honolulu, HI both tested positive for the virus after feeling some symptoms. He owns several medical clinics so it is likely it was spread by a patient. He had to close his PT clinic and lay off the staff. His case was pretty mild but he is in outstanding physical condition for being in his mid- late 40's. He said it was a hassle and not issue-free socially. He was joking that he doesn't have any friends anymore. He has at least 1.

The enforcement of stay-at-home orders has been pretty soft in most places but the grace period seems to be ending. I keep hearing how there are fines and jail in a lot of places if you can't prove you have a legit reason to be out. Several foreign countries are confiscating the vehicles of people who break the isolation directives.

Here in East Tennessee we have relatively few cases. There have been 3 deaths in Blount County and ~150 cases. I'm still holding out hope that the crisis will lift before the Deal's Gap meet is scheduled. HWY 129 runs through Blount. I attribute our low numbers to being slightly out of the way and not being a winter destination for anything. Our delay in response was offset by the extra time it took for the virus to reach us. By the time it got here people had decided that staying home was a good idea. There are certainly more risky places elsewhere in the nation. Supposedly local police are stopping people out driving and checking out their intentions. I don't know anyone who has been stopped. ...Just tell them you are out of TP. That should cover a few trips.

I was supposed to go to a medical conference in New Orleans in mid-June. Although it is not yet cancelled I can't see it happening that soon down there. Not sure if I want to go to NOLA or NYC for a good while. A friend in Shreveport says they are not allowing anyone from Louisiana into Texas. Imagine that...

Here in Pittsburgh we are shut down through to the end of the month. I have at least one more week of lay off to go, but it very well could go longer. Cases have leveled off nicely though. Certainly the worst is ahead still, but the measures seem to be helping. I even found TP the other day, although it was a three roll maximum.

^ this shit gets you banned. this one is for 45 14 days. Its not like i didn't EXPLICITLY state NO POLITICS and to keep it civil .  :whatever:

I haven't been on here in a few weeks and usually enjoy this group because it's an ECSAPE.  I fully believe this thread should have been deleted as the first post had political digs using profanity based on an opinion... but other statements, to me factually stated, get one banned...

I will only spend future time here to obtain technical support... which I greatly appreciate...

Hope everyone stays safe and I believe marcs statement to be one to follow...
