Title: setting up garage at house
Post by: m in sc on November 02, 2020, 05:19:50 PM
finally got moved in with angie last week, and of course the garage is the most time consuming  part.  big thanks for the led and bin suggestions.  now i need the shdd kit to show up so I can clear out the left side and get the bikes in better. should be good for 10 when im done, 2 in repair area
also moveable center toolboxes for car if bad weather, like, tornado's and shit. :cheerleader:

Looking good! When we built, I wired switched outlets in the ceiling of the garage and used 2x48" tubes for lights. They have been converted to LED over the past few years, and Harbor Freight 1x48" LED added, which puts out or than the 2x48s. More light is always good.

Yep, led's make a big difference, light like sunlight.

Nice, I like those LED's. My garage lights are behind the door when it is opened making them kinda useless.

i have a strip right behind the widow on the door, it helped.  but theres 2 16' strips, 2 4' strips, im adding 2 more 4' strips under the bins, dropped. and i have 5 single standalones going: one over the bench, one over the lathe, on over the center island. the other 2 will prob go in the shed. and a 4' basic led fixture off the regular switch.  i have a seperate wall switch for the array of leds, and a wall switch for the bench units.  i rewired a lot, added a few outlets (including one in the ceiling for the array) , and a 40a 220 outlet for the tig welder.  :toot:

Thats my next job to get 220 into my garage. I have all the bits required, Im just procrastinating because getting from the basement to the garage is probably going to be a bit tricky.

If you're going to all the work of pulling 220v 40A into the shop I would seriously consider installing a cut off switch and a pony panel (a small fuse box) in the shop.
A LOT easier to wire to and safer.

agree. a sub panel that long of a reach is good way to go.

mines right under the main service panel so no need.

Also a good time to make provisions for an interlocked emergency generator feed.

Yup, Im kinda kicking myself for not getting the 220 and a generator feed installed when we moved in and replaced the main panel so that there was enough space for a hot tub service.

i tend to keep it clean overall, actually. I was in the apt garage/ shop for 4 years, don't need ot paint walls or clean floor aside from a sweep.

a leafblower is key for reg maintenance

I thought I was the only one lol. The leaf blower works well. Just gotta remember to cover up whatever you don't want covered in potential dust.  :bacon:

Maybe it's just me but I hate leaf blowers. They are a nuisance.

I will push a broom all day long.

hows that? a nice battery one is perfect for a shop. (gas ones are a huge PIA for this) it gets all the stuff out from behind the bench. theres lots of welding and cutting and grinding in my shop, especially with a lathe & mill. broom isn't getting back in behind the shelves.

I also use it to dry cars and bikes after i wash them.  :haw:

side note: anyone seen the heated blanket ad with the guy with the leaf-blower trying to blast if off the woman laying in bed?. thats ridiculous hilarious  :dawg:

My garage ceiling is about 20 feet high, and Ive been planning on building a mezzanine so that I can use the wasted space up there. Sometime soon I will actually get around to it.

IF i had the height, would definitely do that. and put in a car lift. But, alas.

  I'm jealous.
I always say that when we bought our house I wanted nothing bigger than what we(me, wife and daughter) were needed, low maintenance and a garage for bikes.
We ended up with a 5 bed 2-1/2 bath 2500 sf, 120 year old house with a 6x8 shed.

I've since upgraded to an 8x12 shed. Ha!

finally got he shed built, which allowed me to get the yard stuff relocated, making room 'where it counts'. still need to bring a few bikes home,  but this is how it currently sits.

shed for the yard junk. still needs staining/paint and ramp. Bah. Built it all myself. I hate carpentry. 8x12.

thanks to the members on here that suggested the LED strips and the overhead bins.  :patriot:  :cheerleader: those were a huge help, and i get more people that come over asking about the bins than anything non bike related.

Nice! I hate carpentry, too. That's why I bought a Mennonite-built barn delivered and set up for the wife's Kawasaki Mule and garden gear, and paid a guy to build an 8' extension to one side for the garden tractors and other stuff.

Our garage is so small that it barely holds two GoldWings and and RD400c.

the reason i built mine was because i wanted it done the way I wanted. everything was put together with 2 or 3" coated deck screws, vapor barrier under the floor, etc. I drilled each hole prior to putting in the screws, and used 2 per beam vs the 1 nail they recommended.  same with the floor, and roof. except the trim pieces which have finishing nails.  also poured concrete footers then used the piers on top of that, will stay level .

last shed i had built i had to re-shim it to level about 5 yrs in and nails were always squeezing their way out.  still, i did the whole thing, effectively, and mostly single handed, in about 40-45 hours + 10 for the concrete and sub frame.   cash wise i'm in about 2200 total.

Good job on the shed Marc! I'm a carpenter by trade, unlike motors where you sweat the .oo1", we fudge .125" all the time......................D

thanks. I will have to brag.. corner to corner measurements are at 1/8" within each other, so its about as square as it can get. .. Im pretty proud of that.

Now i can get on that 72 R5.  :cheerleader:  :metal:

I was looking at the first photo and I thought wtf? You put some weird bodywork and 60's paint on the lightweight bike?

Then I opened up the photo and realized it was a beach towel. Funny...

All this garage talk finally motivated me to make some changes to mine, It has been driving me nuts that my Tools were set up on the side wall, with my lift at the back.  picks are bad but this layout works much better!

You have some RFY emulsions on that 350. Those are really nice shocks for the price. The build quality actually quite superb. A flush and refill with about 10% more oil really makes them killer.

Thanks for the info, I will definitely do that, any weight you suggest?  I bought them because I've been running RFY piggybacks that I bought while in China super cheap on a KZ400ltd and actually really liked them.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201203/d91bf8fd0ce02aff3bb4e50690dda2c6.jpg)

Sweet Garage.  I don't have that kind of space so I have to pull the bike out every time. Anyways, the RD350 looks great. I love the handle bars; where are those from? Also, those Ronald McDonald dolls are pretty creepy. Can you take a close-up of one for me? :righteous:

M in SC, how have you been liking your air compressor placement, does it cut some of the noise out?  I like the idea of getting it up and out of the way.

Thanks for the feedback, I've been debating moving mine into the rafters but didn't know if it would be worth the effort.  It does remind me of a cool garage gadget that I recommend that works well for things like lights and placing things where the switch is hard to reach,  These remote control outlets work great and I can turn on all the lights at once even though they are plugged into different outlets.

I use a similar thing to control the electric heater in my bedroom, except it had a thermostat built in.

They make everything these days.
