Turning Wrenches / Re: RD 350 transfer port cleanup

Reducing and removing the ledge is basically the first thing you do. Matching the sleeve at the divider is common. I see a lot of knife edged cylinders there. Knife edging is easy but it's old school. Nice rounded and blended ports are preferred. Then clean up and set port timing.

Can't believe the state Ducati is in. Maybe the heat was driving the lack of performance but that was a surprise for sure. Nice to see some other makes on the podium though.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Most used gear oil and 2stroke oil
February 16, 2026, 12:37:06 AM
For vintage motorcycles I don't think it matters much. The gearboxes are overbuilt and even in fairly extreme trim oil isn't the weak point for either engine or transmission performance.

For our race cars we've run some extremely exotic oils. Some worked and some didn't and I've seen a few transmissions bite it. I personally did one in for the tune $10k. Different problems can arise when you are doing dry sump and even dry sump transmissions. These aren't problems these old bikes have. Put oil in them and they are likely to work.

I was just talking to another member here about how the Suzuki2strokes forum is basically defunct. I can neither recover my my account or create a new one. I wonder if it's the same owner as the TDR forum.

Events / Re: Vale at the Olympics
February 07, 2026, 08:17:36 AM
One of my friends that was basically an intern mechanic on a formula car team I worked with for 8 years is now a mechanic on the US men's Olympic bobsled team. He's been doing bobsled stuff for 6 years. It's fun following his socials. He's been in Italy for three weeks already. He does a fair amount of carbon work on the sled. Which is kind of funny because we always made him clean under floors and diffusers, which is the really crappy part that usually precedes carbon repair as those are high wear areas. I guess the training worked out. It doesn't hurt that he's a great dude

Anyways, outside of my aunt being an Olympic marathoner this about as close to the Olympics as I have been.

Late to review the race but what a great run this year. Coverage was great. I really enjoyed it all.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Spiralock vs Standard
February 01, 2026, 02:38:32 PM
In karting land a lot of ham fisted mechanics throwing pistons in after every hour of run time meant a surprising amount of circlip failures. 20k rpm wasn't helping either.

High rpm spiral for sure.

The rest standard. Standards main failure is usually due to a nick in the wire from instal. Have to be careful getting them in.

Oh man. That sucks.

Cult following on those things.

I was under the impression that is how everybody did them.

Switching coils side for side is worth it too.
