Gents, I'm looking for mirrors for my YR2, they don't have to be NOS originals but something that resembles the originals would be nice. But, I'm not sure what they look like!!

Can anyone post a picture of the originals :help:

I've found these but once again, not sure about them..

I've owned several adventure/tourer bike and the one thing I always use as the base staring point is, weight.
There are lots of fantastic AD/TR bike out there and they will all get you there and back without much hassle, but once you start loading them up with all "the Gear" they will start to resemble a Pack Mule shipping dope! You can easily hit the 750pound (350kg) mark and if you've ever dropped a bike then you'll know how hard it can be to get it right side up again, and if you start riding dirt then you will drop the bike (in sand, I guarantee it).

A mate of mine has always said, "you'll only buy the bike you're happy to be seen riding"

Personal picks, second hand Husqvarna TR650 (light weight and not as bad as many will have you believe) Brand new, Yamaha T700 (tenere) stunning light weight, slim and very capable bike.

Christian, the filters are working as intended and I see no reason to replace them for some time, in all I'm really happy with the outcome.

Well it's just great fun now, remembering that this is my first 2 stroke road bike and it's bog stock standard, I'm still learning the intricacies of the engines and the 50 year old suspension :whistle:

So wet back country roads with livestock and blind corners makes for a restrained ride. But in all 115 miles today and I'll be out on Wednesday for another 100mile run up some roads I know very well and with no rain! Sorry for the camera angle....I've sorted that out now.

Sorry guys work takes me away form my bikes far to often..

So Bike is a YR2 1968, jets are 170 main, pilot 30 and needle 5D1.

The slides are in correctly and from what I've observed can only go in one way as they have a locating pin, I wasn't aware that they could be swapped so pulled them both out and had a good look, in doing so noticed that the cut aways are 1.5's not 2.0's.

So I went back to the books and it looks like the carbs are set up as YR1 carbs with the clip at the second position not the third (YR3) as I had it initially.

So I've put the clip on the second spot and wound out the air screw another 1/4 of a turn and have also as quocle603 suggested put some tape around the throttle grip and market it. So I'm hoping to get some riding in on Thursday..watch this space 8)

Hey thanks for the reply, I've since put in new plugs and leaned out the carb. Due to family commitments I won't be able to test ride it till Monday.

Is they any way to tell if it's using to much oil? I've set the oil pump up to factory setting and was wondering what the difference is between the 1960's oils and todays 2stroke oil, can it run with less oil?

Gents, as I'm a new comer to the wonders of two strokes, I need some help with tuning the carbs.

The engine has been completely rebuilt and I've fitted a Vape ignition to the bike. The carbs have been set to factory settings (balanced) and tuned as best as I can. It starts and runs well when hot, but on cruise the engine seems to miss and when I pull up at the lights it occasionally dies, on WOT it really goes hard but I can't ride it everywhere like that :whistle:

So after a good 20min ride I did a plug chop and these are the results, to my (4stroke) eyes it looks to be slightly lean?

This is the first ride the bike has had with the rebuilt engine (25 miles)

I've looked at that reference and it's a little confusing as it lists the YR1 as being R1-00164-12021 and the YR2, R1-7100-12005 (and R1-00121-0076) so in theory my bike R1-8787 can be both :umm:

Well I've worked it out...it's a 1968 YR (2), I was confused with the numbers as I've not had much to do with early Yamaha's, I was under the assumption that they were different model's, now I realise that it's just the year and for part number changes etc! :clap:

Gents, I am sure my bike is a YR2 and did find the info somewhere on the web, but I'm having trouble re-finding it. Is that information amongst the lost info from the old forum or is it still around?

Well I wasn't entirely happy with the pod filters and though that there must be a better way, so....

I visited my local filter supplier (he deals in heavy equipment filters for truck and mining equipment) he's a very helpful chap that often has to find the imposable!

I spent around an hour with his books and the internet parts finder he uses and came up with these, he had a similar used one in the bin and I played at shaping it to form a "D" and it worked.

These are the right inner and outer diameter :clap: a couple of mm shorter and a better (cleanable) filter material, in all, almost spot on but round!

So two Baldwin PA1875 air filters (used in some Bosch compressor) were ordered and a week later I started making YR air filters!

Firstly I used some liquid paint striper on the original filters as they are glued into the two end plates, you could chisel them out and clean it up with a small disc sander, but this was an overnight soaking job they came off really easy the next day.

With some careful manipulating, as it's soft alloy, filter paper and silicon rubber, I was able to form them into a "D" shape similar to the originals.



The end plates cleaned up nicely (I'd re-plate them if doing it again) and I used industrial contact adhesive the glue them together, which doesn't work that well as the filters have silicon mating surfaces and nothing really likes to stick to silicon :eek: but it stuck well enough. I fitted a 12mm foam seal to the end which is to thick but crushes down fine (it crushes down around 6mm), in hind sight I should have used the 9mm foam as it would be perfect.

Once fitted they are compressed by the clips, so the glue really doesn't need to do anything more than hold them together for fitment and the pressure from the clips etc does the rest.






With the foam fitted and the ends sprayed with some silver paint to make them look nice!



really hard to see but it fits the opening perfectly and has the same (if not more) gap around the edge as the original



You could us some silicone sealant to hold them together but.....

Ok that's what I was hoping for! I've now been searching the web for different size pod filters, of which there are many.
Did you leave the original filter outer "lid" in place or just let it breath through there?
