Race Discussions / Re: Lost my racing channel
August 12, 2019, 12:15:32 PM
There is a torrent based site that has all of the races/coverage if anyone would like an invite.  I'm a videopass subscriber but prefer the BTSport coverage (which is not available in the US.)  This is how I justify it from a moral standpoint.

Thanks to both of you.  HPI it is!

Another vote for HPI.

On the rd350 racer we just built, we ran it straight out of the box with no other wiring on the bike.

So -- like I said -- I need educating.  I assume we're talking about this one: https://www.treatland.tv/HPI-CDI-mini-rotor-ignition-system-yamaha-RD350-p/hpi-yamaha-rd350-mini-rotor.htm, right?  $350?

And then I would need coils, rectifier and resistor boot spark plug wires.... anything else?

And since I'm also cheap, what would the difference between the HPI and running this unit https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tytronic-electronic-ignition-for-rd350/192985051350?hash=item2ceece30d6:g:CM0AAOSwrTFdJqdm with the stock generator, coils, plug wires be?

Or this https://yambits.co.uk/rd350-newtronics-electronic-ignition-system-p-23723.html newtronics unit?

It's a little frustrating that the RD350 ignitions appear to be almost the same as CB750 units with different triggers and backing plates yet they cost 2x to 3x the price.

Turning Wrenches / Need Schooling on Ignition Options
August 08, 2019, 02:35:49 PM
I know there was recently another thread about ignition options but it was a bit over my head.  I've got a stock '75 RD350 that I'm rebuilding and I'm close to starting on the electrical.  I've got plenty of experience with wiring and not worried about that but massively confused when it comes to the different types of ignitions, stators, magnetos, coils, rectifiers, etc.

Basically everything is stripped off the bike at this point and I want the least amount of work (and lowest cost) solutions I can find.

Here's what I do know: I'd prefer no battery.  I'll run LED lights.  I'm not going racing.  I'm cheap.  What would you buy?

Help me decide what I need?

Thanks!  I'm definitely going to try something similar!

Quote from: oldguyRD1964 on July 27, 2019, 11:38:50 AMDO NOT FORGET to have 1. a way to plug the cross over tubes. 2. air compressor to blow out the liner epoxy about 10-30 min after you pour the remaining epoxy out. I had to drill into the cross over to fix my mistake.

How were you able to drill this?  One of my crossover tubes is clogged with rust/crud.  I've tried feeding a wire in but the bend is too tight (and the crud is too hard.)  The rust/crud also survived the electrolysis process that I used to get the rest of the tank clean.  I can't see a way to remedy this unless I cut off the cross-over tube and then drill a hole for a blind bulkhead fitting.  Would rather avoid that if possible?

Turning Wrenches / Rd350 carb bowl gasket part #?
July 02, 2019, 10:49:42 PM
Starting to put my project back together (yayyy! Everything is clean!) and the eBay bowl gaskets that I bought didn't fit. I had assumed vm28 gaskets were all the same but these were intended for a snowmobile and not the right size (though they were a very similar shape.)

Anyone know the correct mikuni part number (or have a source for buying the gaskets without building an entire rebuild kit?)

No pegs, just hover your foot and shift without any counter pressure.  :dawg:

Crashed my 929RR once and broke off the foot peg on that side.  It was a long ride home foot hover shifting.   :bang:

Impressive!  What did he use to grind it down so uniformly??

Yep! Although I may have started my build a bit backwards.... My first thought was clean up the fuel system and carbs and make it run. But then I got bored waiting for parts and started cleaning, and taking things apart to clean them better, and now I've gotten pretty far away from the initial goal of seeing this thing run.

More posts to come soon!

I worked a late night on a RD350 on premix one time and forgot to plug the oil injection holes!! :umm:
Big air leak...

Sorry to hi-jack but what do you close off the oil injection holes with?

i have a spare or 2 junk petcock bodies laying around, i can prob dig a fitting out and mail it to you. pm me if interested (not looking for $)

Damn -- can't pass that offer up!  I'll shoot you a PM and we can work something out.

I've got a set of spare carbs off of a 929RR.  I'll check if the nipple size is the same but I'm not holding my breath......

I've got a bunch of other carbs but wouldn't consider them "spare."  They're in boxes for "projects" that may, some day (who am I kidding) go back together.

Missing one of the two brass nipples in the lower right hand corner.  Can't find a part number or replacement for these and I hate spending $75 for a new petcock (this one is rusty but after a few cycles in the ultrasonic and some fresh gaskets it will work fine.)

Or....  Is there an aftermarket petcock available that lines up with the mounting holes?

Or.... Option 3.... plug the existing hole and add a T to the fuel line on the other side?
