General Chatter / Thinking of selling my RD
September 16, 2022, 10:48:46 PM
Considering  selling my baby. 74 RD350. I used to have a '71 and '73 Javelin and want to get back into one someday. Any ideas on what this would be worth? 14,900 miles and original paint with some scratches

64.5mm ProX pistons, RZ crossover intakes, 3mm intake spacers, TDR reeds,  Dave F mod, individual UNI pods, rebuild injection pump (always ran Amsoil Dominator), stainless laser cut brake stay and motor mounts, HVC engine harness boot/cover, GSXR LED integrated tail/brake/signal, bronze swingarm bushings, Vesra brake shoes, Avon Road Rider tires, AGM battery, Emgo H4 headlamp with LED, LED front signals, Racetech front springs, fork boots and seals, DG chambers (GM V6 T-stat gaskets and ultra black RTV sealant) from the '70s, 520 chain conversion, and Vape ignition. Also modified foot peg bracket and new front brake master cylinder.

Factory air box converted to storage. Includes extra jets, center stand, Haynes Manual and miscellaneous extras. Also have magazine ads from the 70s, a vintage RD350 patch and late 60's Yamaha patch.

Turning Wrenches / H4 halogens burning out
August 02, 2022, 04:48:50 PM
Just installed a Vape on my RD350 and now my headlight bulbs keep dying. Another bit of information is that I parked my bike last May due to a charging issue and it has a 5ah AGM scooter battery dated 2020. I noticed after installing the ignition the battery drops to 10.8 volts after the bike is shut off.

Maybe my battery is bad?

The bulbs last a few days. I've been shutting the lights off before killing it and turning on after starting to hopefully make the bulbs last longer.

Thinking of switching to an LED bulb since my signals and tail are already LED. The only thing stopping me is frying a new LED right away.

General Chatter / Suzuki Vendors
July 15, 2022, 06:05:44 PM
I've had a '71 Suzuki TS125 tucked away in my Dad's barn for 25 years and I've decided to pull it out and resurrect it next year. Can anyone recommend any good vendors? Also any decent mods to improve on anything?

General Chatter / Vape

Looking at installing a Vape in my RD350. Any reason to stick to a certain vendor over another when purchasing or do I get the same instructions, support, etc no matter where it's purchased?

Thanks!

Turning Wrenches / Charging system problem?
May 25, 2021, 08:29:34 PM
Almost two weeks ago I was riding my RD350 home from work when it starting running rough and backfiring. Had to rev the piss out of it to keep running as it wouldn't idle. Glad I made it home.
When home I noticed the left side exhaust was cold as the engine was backfiring.

Finally looked into it today. I have Dyna S ignition and thought maybe a screw vibrated loose and timing was bouncing all over on the left cylinder. Pulled the cover and discovered that's not the case. Tried starting after and would only "half" fire. Checked battery voltage and was just above 8 volts. Charged the battery and it fired up and ran great. Noticed my headlamp bulb is fried though. Battery voltage when fires was 12.83 volts and continued to drop to around 12.3 volts even while revved to 2500-3000 (with and without lights on).

Where do I start diagnosing this issue? How do I correctly verify it is charging properly? I know I've successfully checked the charging system prior to installing the Dyna IGN, but manuals I have in hand are not very helpful at the moment.

Thanks all

Turning Wrenches / RD350 gearing
February 07, 2021, 06:15:03 PM
Bike is converted to 520 chain, 14/39 from Economy. I always felt stock gearing was pretty adequate for hauling my 250 lbs around. Since re-doing the top end, Dave F, filters, spacers, reeds, and DG chambers, along with 520 conversion I don't feel that 6th gear is all that useful anymore. Was considering going up a tooth or two on the rear, but this setup doesn't have many miles and don't want to buy another chain.

Would a 13 tooth wear ok and give enough of a noticeable difference in performance? I know reducing the front is probably a big compromise if I step too far down. From what I figure a 13/39 is equal to a 14/42.

Micro Muscle: Under 100cc's / Motorized Bicycle
December 29, 2020, 09:43:13 PM
Starting a new project. Decided that a motorized bicycle would be a good idea. I told the father in law about my plans to use a chainsaw engine (gotta love strokers!) and he said he had some laying around. Got to his house one day to go deer hunting and he had a couple old McColluch Timber Bears sitting on his tailgate. After talking to him a bit about the missing parts we looked through his shed and found a couple more. I really thought the Timber Bears were the ticket as there were two, but shitty recoil and weak spark was uninspiring. So, decided to dump some premix into a newer, smaller, 38 cc machine and it fired right up!

Sold the other saws for almost nothing, and bought a carb kit for the little 38cc. Will post updates.

Haus of Projects / RD tool compartment
June 16, 2020, 04:43:38 PM
Finally realized one of my long term plans. Decided to run individual pods and make the factory air box into a storage compartment.

I cut out the baffles (for lack of better terms) and removed the bottom opening. Then welded a piece of baffle to close the bottom in. A little trimming around the top and this is the result.

Turning Wrenches / Brake light wiring 74 RD350
June 15, 2020, 06:41:07 PM
Where does the grn/yep connect to the blue/wht?? Rear brake light turns on with foot brake, but front won't turn the brake light on. The switch works.

I put a new headlamp on and now having some wiring issues.

The left indicator on the dash also stays illuminated all of the time, even when the signals flash. I'm assuming I have something grounded that shouldn't be?

Thanks all for your replies! :metal:

Thoughts?

Turning Wrenches / Air jet
May 15, 2020, 08:46:11 PM
Is a 1.5 air jet too small for the Dave F mod on a nearly stock RD350 with DGs??? I have no idea why I ordered them. Maybe I planned on drilling to 2?

Rebuilt the engine 4+ years ago and was going off of an incomplete wish list of parts when I ordered these in January.

General Chatter / Weather 180

Yesterday was 58* and sunny, now this. Expecting 6-10" of snow overnight.

Good thing I'm not ready to start my bike yet....

General Chatter / eBay keys
March 19, 2020, 06:56:20 PM
Anyone purchase replacement keys from eBay? For the last few years I was convinced the key was in the ignition of my RD. I've been working on getting it back on the road recently, and happened to look at the ignition only to find the key missing.

Looked on eBay, and willing to pay the price if it's legit. Don't care if I get a genuine Yamaha key even though mine was.

I don't have clip-ons, but have drag bars on my RD. They've been there about 7-8 years and don't want to change them.

What are my options for shortening the throttle cable? I am keeping the oil injection.

Clutch cable?

I clocked the banjo fitting on the brake hose, but considering a full length braided line with a custom angles end to clear the speedo.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Turning Wrenches / Spoke cleaning
March 02, 2020, 06:40:45 PM
Anyone have any good tips for cleaning spokes?

My rims clean up real nice, but the spokes are "crusty" for lack of better terms. Not rusty, but rough. Would like to clean on the bike, but will remove if that makes it easier.

Haus of Projects / Back to my build, sons helping now
February 05, 2020, 08:52:34 PM
Haven't been the best at getting my kids involved in projects over the past few years, although really didn't want them stepping on nails or breathing drywall dust.

Rebuilt my engine 3-4 years ago and let the bike sit partially assembled while I bought my most recent house and started remodeling. Now it's back to the RD and I can get the kids involved. The boys are 8 and 10 and love Minecraft and Legos, but want them to get excited about the real fun stuff.

Gave them the chance to remove the seat, gas tank, and heads by themselves tonight.  They did well with little assistance. We pulled the heads to see if any rust had formed in the cylinders. All is good!
