General Chatter / RZ350 electronic black boxes
December 14, 2023, 04:35:27 PM
I turned on the RZ this morning and the powervalve didn't do it usual cleaning routine.  Battery is fresh and charged so I suspect that the valves were sticky from lack of use.

I removed the side covers and tank and cleaned all the PV servo connections and that seems to have cleared things, but I can't identify one of the black boxes under the tank.

I did find the CDI/ECU it's a 52Y-50 which seems to be correct for a 48H. And the P/V controller hiding under the seat beside the fuse box.

And the 3 wire old school flasher can was easy to locate, leaving two other units ahead of the CDI. One appears to be the side stand control unit.  It has 4 wire connector plus brown (power). The other has a 6 pin connector and might be the flasher cancelling unit but that's a guess.

The stock pipes are long gone so there's no catalytic convertor wiring or controller as far as I can tell.

Anyone tell for sure what the unit obscuring the coil is and the one to its right?

Turning Wrenches / RD400 drag race porting
October 05, 2021, 06:13:00 PM
Anyone got any advice on what can be done to get an RD400 closer to TZ750 porting?

I have an RD350 with 64mm bore TZ750A barrels and it's easy enough to ride, but I need more power.  I could fit a 3G3 Motrac barrel but that's still 347cc and close to 80HP and as they say too much is never enough, so I'm thinking that a full 430 with TZ porting has to be "more".

If I fit a 750D/E top end, it needs a 9mm spacer to account for the extra stroke and 115mm rods, but the piston rings fall into the inlet ports, so that isn't an optimum solution.

Or I could use the hacked up set of RD400 barrels currently acting as a door stop, but that is even more complicated.  I would need to raise the exhaust port from 35.5 to xx.xmm down.  And then raise transfers from 51.5mm down to xx.xmm down.  Unfortunately there's not enough metal above the transfers without machining off fins and welding the roof of the ports up. That's a lot to take off and I can't use a 9mm spacer because the ring/s also fall into the inlet port.

Anyone built a big HP RD400 that would like to chime in?

General Chatter / RD-RZ history
July 05, 2019, 08:15:24 PM
Is there a compilation anywhere that details the changes year to year on R5's through RZ models?

I started with a set of R5 cases and of course they don't have grooves for Main oil seals and not bearing retainer plate. Then I got a set of RD350 cases and RD400 cases with subtle changes, so then I looked at a set of TZ cases which are almost the same but very different in other ways. For example the kickstarter gear spring mounts like an RZ/LC but everything else is more like an RD.  And tehTZ never had a kickstarter so why?

LC cases seem to have wider cases that RDs combined with cylinder stud spacing the same as Air cooled models, so they appear to be half way between RD and RZ. The water pump shaft boss and water pipe hole are like an RZ as well.

RZ appears to be the same as an LC but with new cylinder mounting studs and mouths.

Is there a reference site with all these details and more?

Turning Wrenches / Side stand for Jim Lomas pipes
March 13, 2019, 11:37:48 PM
I have an RD350 in front of me fitted with a beautiful set of Jim Lomas pipes and of course the side stand bangs into them and hangs lower than I would like.

The first thing I did was to remove teh spring end piece and weld it back on so it didn't hit the pipes.  That helped a little.  Then I heated the stand and bent it so that it more or less follows the pipes and when retracted is much closer to the lower frame rail.

It looked good and fitted well and all was good with the world until I rotated it down to lean the bike on the stand and of course it's now too far "out" and the bike leans way to much.  So the stock stand doesn't work with JL pipes and a modified stand doesn't work well as a stand.

Before I cut the last 4 inches or so off and weld in an insert, what am I missing?  Who has fitted JL pipes and what did you do to get the side stand to work?

Turning Wrenches / Dave F on a 350 with JL pipes
February 22, 2019, 11:29:12 AM
I know this was covered many times on the old board but since I can't search that, I thought I'd start a new thread.

RD350 with ported OEM cylinders, YZ85 reeds, Banshee cross linked inlets, 6mm spacers, RD400 head gaskets, stock 28mm carbs, JL stainless pipes, Y boot with tall K&N filter, DYNA ignition.

Carbs have been stripped and cleaned and drilled and tapped to take air jets.  I am thinking as a starting point (should be on the safe side)
Main jets:   220
Needle:      5DP7-3
Needle Jet: 169 P-2
Pilot jet:      32.5
Air jet:           2.0

I read Dale Alexander said that he cut the spray bar down to 2mm but I didn't see that mentioned in a copy of the Dave F instructions. I am pretty sure that I saw Chuck Q recommend that in the past and he knows what works.

Any thoughts, comments or recommendations?

Thanks
