Never seen a vertical head on one of those P&W's, that's really neat.

Nice score on the BP. The generic glass scales from the usual sites are actually quite good and the price is great.

Thank you. Time to start searching for a DRO!

I am more envious of those mills you guys have than of any cool bike...except maybe Joe's! Congratulations and good luck with the installation  :whoop:

Hahahaha thank you!

You could skip the phase converter and just go with a VFD.  I'm guessing maybe a 2hp motor max on that head, a drive won't be that expensive.  You can get single phase specific input on them but the 3 phase input drives work on single phase you just have to up the drive size.  Rule of thumb for that is double but I have the 3hp motor on my lathe running off a 5hp drive.

You can also get 110v single phase input to 220v 3 phase output drives but I think they may be for 1hp max motors.

We're halfway into building a rotary phase converter right now. We scored a brand new 7.5hp 3 phase Baldor motor (still in the crate!) at a business closeout sale for a 100 bucks! And yes, the motor on our mill is 2hp.

i bought a cheap 200 dollar dro off the web a few years ago, man they have come down in price a lot, and its spot on accurate.

I have a small vintage pratt&whitney mill at home which does 90% of what i need, but you just cant beat an old jhead.  :toot:

Glad I have lots of options! I really don't need a super fancy one but it would be nice to have a nice one hahaha. I didn't know Pratt and Whitney made mills!

Got any ideas for what you are going to be making?

You going to get a DRO for it? makes life so. much. better.  :toot:

Thank you. We're so excited! Planning to get one eventually. Maybe a Mitutoyo. I love their stuff. That's mostly what we use at work, as well as a few Starrett tools...

So my brother and I work at a metal stamping shop here in SoCal and we have a full machine shop capable of making just about anything. Ever since we've worked there, these two Bridgeport mills were stashed in a corner of the building as "backups." My brother asked the boss about a month ago if he'd be willing to sell one to us. A week later he came up to my brother and said how much he appreciates how we are into building things and sold us the mill for a smokin' deal. Now time to build a phase converter and get to making some chips!!! Attached are some pictures for your enjoyment. Huge thanks to my dad and my awesome neighbor Dave for helping us move it!

Turning Wrenches / Re: RD400 rear brake master
February 25, 2020, 10:15:05 PM
I completely rebuilt my OEM rear master cylinder, honed it, the whole 9 yards but it just wouldn't develop any pressure. Tried sucking fluid from the caliper banjo bolt end to make sure it was well bled and still nothing. I've heard the rears pit really easy and don't and up sealing, which is exactly what happened to mine. It just leaked around the push rod boot. I was pretty frustrated to say the least.. So instead of buying an expensive magura or brembo unit, I had simply had enough and got creative!
Not the best machine work, but at least I'm not playin' video games like others my age...

I made an adapter for my eBay special master cylinder since the bolt holes were off a tad. I'll have to see If i can find and upload some pictures later. Works really good. Maybe too good....

Stock timing is 2.0mm BTDC
  #1 Run good fuel
100ll ave gas 60/40 NO ethanol pump 92

Retard = 1.9- 1.8 mm BTDC

Use good fuel and 2.0mm for round town fun. Long high speed runs 1.8mm

Thank you for the info. If possible, I would be grateful if anybody that sees this post to share a detailed process of how to set the timing just right.

Turning Wrenches / RD400 Ignition Timing (stock points)
February 23, 2020, 08:36:03 PM
Hey all! I need some advice on getting my RD400 ignition timing right. I've heard many say to retard it back a tad to compensate for the crappy pump gas we have now but I'm not sure what to do. Just a little info on what my bike has: DG pipes, bigger jets(obviously), UNI pods with stock "manifolds" and the stock points setup with new points and condenser. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey all, I would like to mount a fire extinguisher on my bike somehow. Its a 1.4 pound kidde. Nice and compact. I rarely carry a backpack and would like to come up with something. As the old saying goes, "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it." I've seen videos of folks watch their vehicles burn to the ground because they didn't bother to buy a <50 dollar extinguisher!
Thanks!

General Chatter / Re: It's a 2-stroke!

Those old gas powered washers are super cool. Our family went up to Santa Cruz in Northern California for a quick vacation and stopped at a huge rest stop/gas station. They had tons of old cars, equipment, a 50's style diner and other stuff inside that I had never seen before. Here is one of things that stood out to me that you reminded me of:

Everything lines up perfectly! Now that I know where all of my holes are, I can finish shaping and polishing up the caliper adapter to make it look better. No CNC's or CAD used on my conversion!  :whoop: 8) :righteous:
