Turning Wrenches / Re: Refinishing Pipes…
September 15, 2023, 11:47:07 AM
Hey thanks for the update
I didn't know that .
It seems with each passing year more and more shops are closing. Seesh kinda sad.
At this rate who is going to remain.
I have emailed John but what are my alternate options

is Garett still making them?
i really like the way they look.
i was thinking of getting a set
Unfortunately no, Garret closed his biz about a year ago and quit making the Moto Carrera pipes. However, I do kind of recall John at Economy mentioning something about a deal in the works for Economy Cycle to take over the production in the near future. Maybe he'll see this and comment on the status of that.

EDIT:  Found the comment from John about taking over the pipe production  https://www.2strokeworld.net/forum/index.php?topic=5605.msg47471#msg47471
Reach out to him and ask about it

Quote from: AAAltered on April 16, 2023, 06:25:21 PMFinally ready for spring.   Saw a window today for garage time.
All set, I was dying to fire it up but the pipe sealant needs a day to set up.
Spit polished, battery charged, oil changed, heads torqued, aluminum polished, carb leak resolved, pipes repaired and painted.

You will probably need to swap out the needle and NJ you have now. A common upgrade for the VM28 is the "Dave F Mod" which uses the 5DP7 and 169-P0 (or P2). This is in conjunction with a 5/64" drilled (or 2mm) airjet. These specs are usually applied to RD350s, but should also work for the 250 (hopefully someone can confirm that). Pretty sure the only change from the 350 to the 250 would be the PJ & MJ, which you are already doing.

ive heard a lot about the DAVE F mod
what is the advantages of this mod
what does it do and where can i read more about it

What work do you need and what parts?

You mention the 115mm crank, and fitting a 400 trans, but do you need ignition and porting and bead blast and carbs rebuilt etc or could you do some of that yourself.

Engine building typically takes a lot more time that is charged for.  If you stripped and cleaned the cases and other parts that could reduce the time an engine builder has to take.

For example, simple things like cleaning the crankcases, getting the mating faces flat, countersinking all the screw holes etc take time for a builder, but you could do those at home with a little support.  And that applies to side covers and so on.  Take your time on jobs like that and farm out machining and porting if you feel up to it.

I saw an invoice of Chuck's on line recently and his parts bills were fair but he gave away his labor. He charged minimal amounts for things that just eat time.  As a hobby that's fine to support the sport, but it's hard as a business building motors for people like us.

There are (at least) two Eds: Erlenbach and Toomey, JT of RDsonly, Bill (?) Wilson, John Ritter might be persuaded, Wicked Motorsports come to mind. I won't name anymore who hasn't hung out a shingle as a professional, but there are some members on here with whom I'd trust my engine; maybe one of 'em needs a pre-winter project?

i sent out a msg to Ed erlenbach over here but he hasnt responded yet.
i will google out the others you mentioned unless you have their contacts and try to reach out to them
thanks

Turning Wrenches / RD350 engine builders suggestions
October 07, 2021, 09:12:47 AM
hello

since Chuck has now retired from building RDs due to his unfortunate situation
i am in a bit of a pickle.

Chuck has agreed to finish my crank since he has all the parts
but the rest of the engine still needs to be worked on
can someone guide me to another reputable engine builder please.

i was building a stage 2 long rod RD350 motor with WEBCO heads.
i also have a RD400 tranny

i have tried to get in touch with Ed / Garrett. is there any one else that you guys can recommend
thanks

he says he might not be able to open up again and do any more RDs
its very sad.

Ouch! :'(  Another part of the community and a huge resource gone. As the years go by they're diasappearing.

I wish him the best and hope there's some way that maybe something works out for him in the 2T realm. He had all that equipment, not to mention his many years of expertise and knowledge.

He still has all the equipment stored up
But his finances don't support him opening up again
It seems the land prices have skyrocketed in his Area and it
Seems unlikely to find an affordable place

I have parts with him . Now I don't know who will finish
My  engine .
