Turning Wrenches / Re: MZB iggy started backwards

We have an upgraded hardware kit for the Vape that works better than the hardware Vape sends in the kit. We include the M7 bolt and thick washer (4-5mm). I torque them to 20 ft/lbs and don't have trouble with them slipping or snapping off bolts.

yup. could have been worse...

this was in 09 or so. same thing.

That was my flashback Mark! lol.  My 74 did the same thing with the crane cams hybrid iggy that you helped me build when the old site was up.  Had to replace the whole bottom end on that one.

Yup with the right spring rate and sag, RD's handle very well. Thanks for the feedback.

The older style drum had 2 issues. One was the square trigger and the other was the rivets would loosen up over time. So several years ago, Vape changed the drum to a one piece with no rivets and a ramped trigger (trailing edge) to prevent reverse starting. With those old drums no half kicks or lazy kicks to help prevent backwards starting.

This is the new rotor, you can see the ramped trigger at the 4-5 o'clock position and no rivets on the front.

John, I see you have those rotors on the site.  Guess I better put in a new order.  BTW, I picked up the adjustable preload fork caps from you and they are money!  So nice to have the sag dialed in with the simplicity of a screwdriver instead of cutting spacers over and over again.

Make sure that longer bolt isn't bottoming out (it's been reported a few times), Add washers if it does. 18-20 ft/lbs of torque on the bolt.

General Chatter / Re: Replacement seat cover RD400E

I see Economy Cycle has a seat cover for the RD400E model.  Does anyone have experience/reviews of that cover?

Decades ago I replaced an "E" cover with a '76-'77 cover because it was all I could find.  It worked pretty well, I just had to trim the excess vinyl off the back of the seat.

Attached is a picture of that bike with the new seat cover for reference.  Aloha 808 has that bike now.

It's the right one Mike, short tail no trimming needed, no Yamaha on the back of the seat, correct block pattern. I have 2 78's and like you used a 76/77 on mine before we could get the covers for 78's. And the quality of these covers are better than originals IMO.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Cylinder fin isolators

We send 20x of the head dampers with the kit and 4x of the cyl dampers. The USA 250/350 use 20x of the head dampers, the c/d/e 400's use 18. The head dampers are identical, the cyl dampers are specific to the 250/350/R5/DS7 and 400.

The USA F Daytona used 4 cyl dampers but they were unique to the Daytona and no head dampers. I don't carry those, not sure if they're available anywhere and if they were like the non usa F & G's.

The later 250's in europe were different and looked more like our 400's so that can be a bit confusing when looking at yambits parts.

As far as quality goes, sold them for years don't recall any complaints other then the head dampers are hard to get in, which is true, but that's the way it is, if they were easy to get in they wouldn't stay in.

Yes Nick is still doing the iggy's and leak down kits. I talked to him a few weeks ago. He's working full time as an EMT but is doing his parts on the side. He's sending me a batch soon.

General Chatter / Heads up - Yamaha Price Hikes
December 02, 2021, 05:11:11 PM
I'm seeing some major price hikes on OEM Yamaha parts recently

examples
Oil Drain bolt gasket 4F4-14766-00 - $15.49  :jaw:
Yamaha Manifold Gasket / Reed Valve Intake Gasket 87A-13621-00-00 - $12.49
Yamaha RD250/350/400 RZ350 (all) Oil Pump gasket 126-13116-01-00 - $14.49

I've checked some of the big online parts retailers like cheapcycleparts, boats.net, etc., and though less than retail, there's some big corresponding jumps there as well and some others that don't seem to have updated prices yet

EC has all that stuff in reproductions at a fraction of the cost, but we still sell a lot of OEM Yamaha parts as well - Yikes!

Maybe it's temporary due to COVID affecting supply chain issues, who knows but wow that's a lot of cabbage for paper gaskets.

I did the Economy sprockets (not real happy with the short gearing, i'd prefer stock final drive) and the quality is great.

Good to know. With the kits we sell the rear is 39T and I think stock was 40, but the front sprocket we send with a 14t and I've thought about changing it to a 15T.  Any feedback from others would be appreciated. We do offer any sizes you want in individual sprockets but for the kit we just want to do what most RD guys/gals would want for a street application.
