Uni Filters: Cautionary Tale…

After going through the RD200 I knew I needed a new set of Uni Filters since I had found a deteriorating foam in the easily accessible right side box.

Yesterday I went in to change them both.  In the 7 years I've had this bike I never looked in the left side box, since it is not easily accessible.  Getting to the left box requires dropping the oil tank.  Not a big deal, just never did it.  Shame on me.

Check out what I found in the left box.  Complete mess of oil, goo, and a former filter.  An hour or so to clean out the box with alcohol soaked rags.  I'm good to go now and magically I feel like the bike is running better!

Found a mouse nest & chewed up filter once. Wasn't on an RD though.

yup. they need to be checked at least once a year. ive run into that as well.

Title is a bit misleading, sounds like it was uni at fault at first glance.

Have indeed had to clean these out of carbs before, dont know if they were unis, they almost seemed like upolstery from what I remember.

That would do it... your title made it seem like Uni filters are problematic.
