Hello All:

Does anybody know what prevents the gear shift select to rotate past 1st gear when it is selected(shift down)?

I noticed this when I had the rear set shifter set up wrong and I selected 1st gear and although it went into 1st, I didn't feel it has any mechanical stop.

Everything seems fine though.  It runs and shifts great and doesn't pop out of gear.  Could it be the neutral finder bolt or spring that rides on the shift drum stopper plate?

thx

Do you have 5 or 6 gears? In some european countries, the 6th gear was "blanked off" using a Crescent shaped steel part on the 6th gear pin at the RH end of the shift drum. This piece makes the shifter claw "slip" instead of "grip" that pin. At the same time, the shifter "feel" in 1st gear is changed.

the shift drum slot stops them against the pins on the shift forks.

also, the part dvsrd is describing is also present on 6 speeds as well so the pawl cant try to grab past 1st, or past 6th which would probably lock up the shifter. see the 'resurrecting a dead 400 thread' as this part on the shift drum is mentioned on there w pics

Hmm. I don't quite understand that. On the 74 RD350A that i bought from my cousin, there was only 5 speeds. Then I removed that Crescent shaped part, and had 6.

we never had the blanked off gears in the usa on any model.

this is what stops it from overcoming below 1st and over 6th (see pic)

the drum itself will not let it rotate past 1st or  6th either. the channel the pin on the shift forks ride in stop at that point.
