A friend of mine has an Indian repop Rajdoot tank that I was interested in buying, until I noticed these tiny flakes coming from inside the tank.

I assume this is the same lacquer primer that's on the outside of the tank. How they managed to spray that much INSIDE the tank took time and dedication :humpty:

Anyone have any tips/suggestions to make this a little easier. Use lacquer thinner and a few hours worth of time? Line with Caswell and call it a day? Fill with concrete and toss it off a bridge? Any helpful tips are appreciated.

I would imagine some acetone or xylene with some nuts would take care of it.

If the tank NEEDS lining Caswell is the best.

Looks like zinc or solder. Is it soft? I wonder if they seal the seams with something?

Solder drip from sealing the gas filler neck?

It's possible that I was holding solider, but the inside of the tank is completely covered (every single inch) in what looks like primer (exact same as the outside) It's chipping and definitely not bare metal.

the picture certainly adds more context. Looks like primer to me too now. Go with Marks suggestion and rinse it out and see what you have. Maybe something slightly acidic like Vinegar would melt or dissolve it. Paint thinner or solvent?

It goes deeper. I'm 99% sure they bend the metal, use a brush to slather this stuff onto the metal, and pull it together at the top and weld.

I have not yet given money for this tank. I may decide on a different route. $200 plus $80-$100 for 10 gal coverage of Caswell...or a bare metal eBay tank for under $100.

I appreciate everyone's input. You guys are superb.

Just to add some additional context in the event someone is in a similar situation in the future.

I'm not convinced this coating is primer. If it is, it's incredibly fuel resistant. I placed saturated small cotton pads every 30-60 mins on a designated area, with a 4oz weight, over the course of 6-7 hours yesterday. It did not break down. Even added plenty of elbow grease to try and remove it, and it didn't budge.

Once I get the petcock situation sorted out (mating surface is very different) , I'm going to fill it with a gallon of fuel and let it sit for a week or two. I'll be surprised if it breaks down.
