RD400 -battery lead wire gauge

I'm doing a little wiring work on my 1977 RD400 and need to make some new leads from the wiring harness to the battery terminals.  The stock leads look like they are 16 awg.  Can anyone advise what gauge wire should be used for these leads?  Thanks, Bill
