trust me, i've had bikes that 'ran'. one had a blown crank seal, the other was missing half a piston.  thersa slew of horror stories i can rehash.

always worth spending an afternoon to go thru the bottom end, re-gasket it, and replace anything suspect due to wear and know exactly where you stand. a gasket set is cheap. crank seals are cheap. good insurance.
Elaborate why teflon is not your favorite. Please?

I didn't say it was bad, just don't see the need overall. the face is usually ok, but the sides of the seal get hard,  crack and loose flexibility which is usually what causes the leaks in my experience. ive yet to see one fail at the lip on a yamaha twin with the rest of it still being pliable and flexible. im sure the Teflon ones seal excellent and don't wear.
