bracket maker

Let't drag mark into another thread. I have the upmost respect for mark. He is an amazing mechanic and fabricator. I am niether. I am a good mechanic and an awful fabricator. thats why my sig is bracket maker. taking a bracket and drilling holes in it is my fab skills. I know my place. my skill is in re-writing almost 50 year old manuals to use modern electrical parts.

what makes mark really special is he could care less what I do. I have the freedom on this site to say why and how. uncensored. he does not agree with me on occasion, and is cool with it.

mark has an r5 bone stock with a mechanical regulator. I said I skeve mechanical regularors like they are roaches. I live in nyc. our roaches are especially nasty. If I see one I will kill it bare handed. we don't agree.

why? marks r5 runs perfect bone stock. why complain about it. well here's why. it starts with knowing how a part works and what it does.

An antique bike that runs a mechanical regulator has 2 modes only. at idle the bike is not charging. the regulator is off. at idle all antiques runs off the battery and not off the charging system.  at about 2k rpm the charging system starts working. from 2k to redline the bike is charging. at about 4k the regulator turns on because the voltage is above battery charging voltage 14.3v. this works till about 5k then the 2nd antique regulator kicks in. It's called the big ass heavy battery. above the charging voltage the battery resists charging any more by boiling off water. It was normal at the gas station in the '70's to have battery water available. yup distilled water in a goofy container sitting ontop of the gas pump. the dude at the staton would open up the individual battery cells and add water as needed.

as a mechanic I always want better after I do a repair. the electronic regulator that was made possible by the transistor is a better repair. It is because it works differently.

the electronic regulator starts working exactly the same as the mechanical regulator. at idle it is turned off because antiques work by running off the battery at idle. at about 2k the electrical regulator kicks in and keeps the voltage charging at 14.3 till red line. with a electronic regulator the battery does not do any regulation!

what does all of this mean. An antique bike with a mechanical regulator works fine bone stock. it also means no tiny batterys. you are forced to use heavy old fashoned batteries that have access to the cells to replace water.  a scoot agm battery will work for a time but will burn out quick on the highway. as bruno says to his gaybay oj, running a lithium battery with a mechanical regulator is a nitch nitch. eventyally you will roast your nuts. led's are also nitch nitch with mechanical regulaors. the led that runs flawlessly 10,000 hours at 12v will last 5 hours at 16v. cheap led's come without a driver.

no one on this site needs to be an engineer to make these repairs. buy a plug and play regulator from economy cylce, run a cheap light agm scoot battery and save money in the long run. throw out the battery tender and use the extra room in the battery box to carry oil, not lead. with a modern regulator you can run led's and save even more. you will not believe how much less gas is used at idle till you back out the idle screw youself after changing the headlight. 1157 cob leds for the tail are plug and play. just unplug the relay behind the horn on an rd. as a city boy I spend a lot of my riding time at idle waiting for vision zero lights. you don't want to know.

Two things.
I agree with you.

And where is the techno babble emoji?

cant believe you have a hard time understanding me. too bad. I'm just warming up re-writing honda manuals. the other jim turned me on to something with his technobabble. next post will be epic. been learning a lot on this site.

Everyone has a style.  Ben (bracket maker) tends to be very precise; some may think longwinded.  But that can be a good thing when it comes to helping someone like me understand electrics.  Admittedly, I often don't read all the info Ben posts.  All I know is that if he says XYZ voltage regulator works, I take it for granted.  I simply don't care How it works.
I tend to be curt, sarcastic, cynical, and, some may feel, mean (when I may see an individual is repeating mine, or other's errors, but they insist on forging ahead).
Ben has helped me when I have had a project that I knew the end result I wanted, but didn't know the correct electronic bits to use.  His advice was spot on and he replied quickly.
If you want long-winded technobabble, check out Snowbum's bmwmotorcycletech.info     That guy can write two and a half pages of inane ramblings about how a cotter-pin works.  Plus a lot of his 'info' is contradictory and wrong.  Ben always seems to be spot on, and I appreciate that.

just because i dont hot-rod my electronics on every. single. thing, dont think i dont get picky or precise about it.  for example, my 62 falcon still has the generator in it. and, i rebuilt it 7 years ago. does fine for what i use it for. my galaxie has a top of the line 'tuff stuff' charging system and electric fans and all sorts of gadgetry. i use it for different things.

that's not my point at all. you are more picky and precise then me. my long gone 61 comet got the generator thrown out and I it replaced with a gm 2 wire alternator with internal regulaor. the point is you don't care if I post about it. If I bought your r5 the first thing I would do is change the regulator, do you think I should be banned for saying that. I'll answer for you, course not. you keep that r5 bone stock for a good reason. It makes it more valuable because there are people looking for bone stock.

Got into a shit storm on ddt with Irk Miller. those ddt idiots think 50 year old manuals are written in stone like the 10 commandments and can not be rewritten using parts that did not exist 50 years ago. I'm also banned from posting new posts on the honda twins site.

Drew, I'm so happy for some kind words but I don't think I need to be defended from pdxjim. true I use too many words, and I'll try to take your advise and try to shorten my posts. but if you read my post there is not a big word in it. its all plain english. anyone who actually reads my post can see pdxjims post is stupid. I don't talk like this in real life, couple symbols says it all. I am a lot of things, but I'm not a liar. when I say a part will work it's because I've tried it first. I like to run stuff at least one season before posting. I'm not smarter than anyone, took engineering in school and enjoyed it. went both ways they offered me 1/3 off tuition if I stayed. turned it down and went to state grad school in buffalo.

frank b gets it. +1.

retard, there is no technobabble but they have this one for your post

its great info ben. Im serious, really is.
however, most people have no desire to completely rewire a bike, or keep it stock. I personally don't mind. but to tell somebody they are doing it wrong (when its just different) will sometimes yield inflammatory responses sometimes. I mean, i have a complete setup to liquid cool the R5 if i wanted.  But, i like it for what it is, and its never ever let me down. could i make it 'better'? sure.. but i do appreciate old technology and leaving it as it was designed in some cases.(now it does have a dyna on it from Nick admittedly)  in others, i like to rip it out and redesign the whole thing. but with a complete, nice survivor, i don't like to deviate too much. I know, eventually, down the road, somebody as yourself will do all that. Im ok w that.  :toot: :vroom:

Oh I get both sides of the discussion, improve it with modern technology, but also to leave it alone if it works. If I had a beautiful survivor I'd leave it as is. Every 2 stroke I've had has been modded already at some point.

there are no two sides, I've never told anyone to do anything. don't read my posts if you don't care why something works. my posts are always the same read the last paragraph and suck up everything with a simple summary. all I did was try to explain how antiques can be repaired using modern parts. mark is fine with it and that makes him a saint.

drew my next post is how any mechanic can wire any honda twin for $5.56 shipping inluded!

sure there are 2 sides.

Quoteall the rest of us would use a modern rec/reg. the stock mechanical regulator is crap.

not really. anything that has worked for 40 years isn't really a bad design.   :twocents:

LOL, DTT is only good for laugh, for me personally. Flat black spray paint, and french bread seats. :brownseat:

And Any good board will allow most anything related to the board, and civilized discussions. How civilized is up to the mods. The old board, and the new one has been very good about keeping things under control. Well, there were some dust ups on the old board, but that was a long time ago.  And a lot better than the free for alls of yesteryear.

And there will always be differing opinions, how it's handled is what makes the difference between a crap board and a good one.
