After riding Josh's 421 with 16/40 gearing at Deals Gap and noting how much harder it pulled than mine with 17/40 gearing, I ordered a 16 tooth Sunstar steel countershaft sprocket from Summit racing and a NOS countershaft collar from an eBay vendor. I installed them yesterday and all that was left today was to reinstall the left engine cover and the shifter. Upon arrival in the shop this morning I was greeted with a puddle of 2 stroke oil under the LH chamber as big as my head. I was not a happy camper. I pulled the left side cover and discovered my less than 6-month-old Yambits oil feed line that runs from the tank to the pump had split just past where it pushes onto the barbed fitting on the oil tank. Thank God it happened sitting on the lift and not going down the road. I pulled it off and plugged the tank. The line felt just as soft and pliable as the day it was installed. I keep spares of almost all consumables on hand, so another Yambits oil feed line was installed with the proper factory clamps. I bled the pump and inspected the also Yambits oil lines that run from the pump to the intake and all appears to be well.
I took the Gray Ghost on a 70-mile romp and the difference in ease of operation and response is remarkable. It is so much easier to ride. 6th gear is actually useable now and low-end torque is abundant even more so than before. Power wheelies are a throttle blip away in 1st and 2nd and it floats the front wheel in 3rd. I find that 70 MPH equals 6 grand in 6th right as the motor comes up on the pipe. Much less up and down shifting is needed. It will pull from 2500 in 6th until you get scared. I droned around in 6th a lot today. Apparently the 16/40 is the right combination. The small 5800 RPM burble is almost un-noticeable now and it pulls right through in every gear.
